Quote: Lotus07 Um, that coin^ was already posted by ZacUK... They both have Victoria on, yes; but mine is Canada (Newfoundland) and Don's is Great Britain. Also mine is a 1 Cent and his is a 1/4 Penny (Farthing).
BUT - the coin Don added is a day too soon - today is 1880 and that coin is 1879.

Now amended - but keep your coin on there as it only a few hours to go (currently nearing 10pm GMT) until 1879 day (unless you have an 1880 to add as well for today).
EDIT: Or have I got that wrong as well. As this is the English version of the site I assumed the new day would be on English time (some times of the year there is an hour difference with Europe). Maybe New Zealand is already on Wednesday.
At the start of this topic I read 'Midnight, MDT (GMT -7:00) is the time when the new day starts' which I took to mean that in England we can not post until 7am. So midnight GMT is when places 7 hours before us can post. I am confusing myself.
Still, it is a nice coin Don, as always.

Um, that coin^ was already posted by ZacUK...
and yes it does get confusing with the time zone as its 12.30pm Wednesday here.
I guess we are the only ones still posting coins and even some of the other sites I am in nothing is happening(might get 1 posting every 4 days)
All good

1870 was a turmoil year in Europe. The franco-prussian war meant the end for the French empire, hence the resignation of Napoleon III. France became a republic. This reflects in a variety of French 5 francs coins issued in 1870. One of the tough ones is this 1870 K (Bordeaux mint) coin using the Ceres design and without the motto 'Liberté, égalité, fraternité':
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces1185.html
It is a two year issue, after which the 'classic design' with the Hercules group replaced it.

Belgian 5 Francs, 1867, Leopold II. While not a key-year, this issue comes in several varieties. This one with the dot behind the currency "F." is less common than others and deserves a small premium.

A tough choice today (more often I have no choice or nothing to choose from). I go for the Belgian 20 francs Leopold I, 1865: the last year of his reign. It is peculiar that over half a million 'posthume' coins, dated 1866, were released. New 1866 dies had been made and coining had started as the first Belgian King died in December 1865.

Queen Victoria 1863 penny, one I dug up whilst metal detecting. Nice condition for 150 or so years in the ground.
