Countermark on Siglos

Discussion about Achaemenid Empire • Siglos - Darius I / Artaxerxes II (THE ROYAL COINAGE - 3rd type)

I have a Siglos which has the same design of the king on the obverse (Type 3B) to this illustrated example N#60745 and also the same countermark on the reverse. Is this mark a known one? What does it signify? Could it mean that my coin and the one illustrated were from the same hoard?

Many thanks,

George

It's possible that they're from the same hoard or it flowed through the hands of the same person who used it to test the silver content integrity. They were plating and using lower purity silver, even in those days. I'd say, at least for me, the fact that the crescent moon and star theme was used enhances the value. Usually, like mine, the punch was on the obverse, in fact, I've never seen another on the reverse. Very Nice!

Thanks for replying. When checking the examples for sale on vCoin, MA-Shops and eBay, I spotted another with the same punch mark on the reverse. Just had a look at those sites and didn't spot it. One would have to look at the large images of the coins to see it.
