Dates on Mustafa III coins [solved]

6 posts • viewed 65 times

I have a question about the dating system of the later coins of Mustafa III (for example this one: N#89496).

His earlier coins are using the standard Ottoman dating: ascension year (in AH) + regnal year. This is used from AH1171//5 to 1171//9.
Then the later coins are suddenly dated from 1171//80 to 1171/87.

I'm not sure about this, but the Krause cataloge gave me a hint:

Am I understand it correctly that this dating is using the last 2 digits of the current year (in AH) but also showing the ascension year (in AH) for some reason? These dates are 1766-1773 in Gregorian, which coincides the later years of Mustafa III.
It looks like that his successor went back to the usual ascension year + regnal year combo, so this pattern didn't last long.

Also how should we show this in  Numista? The current dates on the 5 para page that I've linked are obviously broken, because they're showing the ascension date for every date line but I'd like to ask some second opinion on this matter before I start opening modification requests.

The ascension date should be shown on every year line as that is what is on the coins from all years. SCWC was revised to show this:

I believe this should be handled in the Comments section as the difference in the SCWC codes. Or maybe revise the year lines as this:

This was also discussed recently here:  https://en.numista.com/forum/topic144151.html

Also the gregorian date in parathesis should be altered to the actual AH/+regnal

1171 (1763) 5

1171 (1764) 6

1171 (1765) 7

1171 (1766) 8

1171 (1767) 9

1171 (1767) 80

That's not something a normal user can do.

No, but the referee it doesn't even need an admin (only if the (11)80 coins doesn't have the 1171 ah year and only the last digits they should be 1180 (1767) and an admin has to edit those).

Thank you for the clarification. I can see that the 1 para, that you've linked earlier is now fixed:
N#42255

I'm going to open modification requests for the incorrectly dated Mustafa III coins. Although I can't edit the dates directly, but I can add some notes to the comment part and ask the referee to edit the Gregorian dates.
