The ever changing German Eagle

I’ve always been a fan of German coins, they’re some of my favorites to collect, especially old marks and Thalers, but after WW2 (especially in the 70’s), commemorative coins minted in West Germany changed the eagle all the time! Like, ALLLLL the time

Some examples:

N#3436

N#3435

N#1939

N#9720

N#2970

N#7616

And MANY more.

Do y’all have a favorite eagle used on German coinage? And what’re your thoughts on the extreme variety of designs for it in the post war era?

Eagles are some of my favorite coin motives and I like the old style German eagles. Some of the modern ones are nice but the vast majority of them look goofy to fugly. The unique eagles are a feature not a bug they are intended to show case artistic freedom and make them distinct from standard circulation coins of the time were 5 DM coins still circulated.

I don't have a favourite (not looked too closely at all designs to choose), but honestly, I do like the variety.

I don't necessarily like every design individually, but the idea that it can change yet be instantly recognised is a wonderful thing. I think its better than having the same design consistently. At least if I don't like a design, I know it won't be long until the next one comes along! 😛

Nice spot to share. Interesting to see such a wide variety.
