Set of medieval coins with unusual reverses [solved]

8 posts • viewed 182 times

I have just acquired a set of medieval coins which I and friends looked at. We agreed that they seem to be something we've seen before. They are each about 19 mm and weigh about 6 gm. The obverse is a simple short armed encircled cross with an inscription in what appears to be gothic letters. The reverse, however is a  weak cross and has two stars on one side of it and, I believe, two crescents below it . This is also encircled and with an edge notation.. I couldn't get the words yet but I do enclose here two of the coins. The dealer I used suspected they may be French, but  i have seen no examples yet. Any ideas?

Without pictures, it will be very difficult for anyone to help you. Could you please post clear pictures of each side of your item?

Please note that this is an automatic message. Feel free to ignore if it is not relevant.

I can add something here. The reverse is two stars over a bar. Below is a design that looks like two birds facing away from each other (or two fish?). Maybe this can help.

The side with the two stars resembles the  left photo in this Burgundian denier:  N#125509

You could see if any of the lettering matches (a better photo would help).

The other side of yours isn't such an obvious match (nothing in the corners of the cross), but maybe it is a variant, or those features are worn away.

(And I assume each weighs 0.6 grams?)

These are obverse and reverse of one of the better coins (I have five) Inscription, while hard to read, seems to be 13th century Gothic, so it fits your time guess. Not sure but hope these help. Thank s so much.

Second photo is very helpful.  I see + NIVERN… IT  or  maybe + NEVERN…IT .

So, probably not Burgundy, but this should be findable
