(en) Rare Dr. Stuart's Glasgow (Lanarkshire) farthing token dated 1841.
Dr. John Knox Stuart was a qualified medical practitioner who advertised his services extensively and died on 19th August 1854. Listed Bell's "Unofficial Farthings - A Supplement" as "RARE".
There is another version of this token; with HONOUR above the seated figures. On the other side the lettering around outside is PRIVATE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT 1841 and no MIDWIFERY & NURSING lettering inside.

This great pictorial 1841 token advertised the medical practice of Dr. John Knox Stuart in Glasgow, Scotland, and is considered to be scarce - if not rare. Although no denomination is provided on this token, it circulated as a farthing. Dr. Stuart (sometimes characterized as a 'quack' doctor) advertised his services widely, as with this token. The obverse has an image of two seated men (one taking the other's pulse), with the date 1841 beneath the image and the words PRIVATE MEDICAL ESTABLISHMENT along the rim. The reverse side has an image of a woman breast-feeding a child, with the words MIDWIFERY & NURSING near the image and the incused words DR. STUART - 39 MAXWELL STREET - GLASGOW along the rim.
This token measures approximately 22 mm (7/8") in diameter, appears to be composed of copper, and has a plain edge. The 1⁄4d token is W7430 in the Token Book 2.
