I have a 1961 One Shilling United Kingdom coin. When I went to add it to my collection there is a mark next to it that says '(fr) rare', What does the 'fr' mean? It's in pretty poor condition unfortunately so hopefully not super rare.
(fr) simply means it's a comment from the French site.... and the rare is questionable, I've got both the km904 and 905 from the "rare" years.
We had agreed (numista) some time ago to avoid comments like "scarce", "rare", "common" etc, since everybody can read the minting numbers and make their own opinion about that.
PS Next time please give link to the coin, it makes it so much easier. Here you forgot to tell us, if you talked about the English or Scottish 1 shilling from that year....

Ah I had a feeling it might stand for France but wasn't sure of the relevance. Thank you so much. Apologies for not including the link I'm still figuring out how this all works. It was the English coin in this case. Thank you again
Modification request has just been validated so the spurious comments should now be removed. And that's how a collaborative catalogue works people, many thanks for all your participation.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
The gross overuse of rare in the US catalog is not so bad anymore, except for the Barber Quarters. Looks like someone else has done some work on the rest of the US.
Perhaps just ban the term "rare" all together? An occasional use of the term "key date" would probably be more accurate.

No need for that either, everybody is old enough to make their own opinion......
