Some countries such as Russia and Turkey are rightly listed on two continents. Perhaps the same should be done with Papua New Guinea ─ Asia and Oceania.
I see that France is currently listed for Europe + Africa + North America + South America. Does France still have possessions in Africa? If the argument is that they used to have colonies in Africa, then the UK should also appear under all these continents.
Since we are at this, I would argue against adding Spain under Africa (if this was ever suggested), even though they currently hold two or three exclaves on the coast of Morocco.
The point of the filter is to facilitate searches. It's better to be a little more comprehensive than less. In addition, there is no continental line dividing the western half of the island, which is part of Indonesia, from the eastern part.
Likewise, the division between Europe and Asia is a rather moot point.
This is quite a common point of argument when people are talking about regions, but use geographic versus political borders to define such regions
In PNG case, Australia only took over the eastern half of the island after WW1; before that the eastern half was occupied by Germany and UK while the western half was under the Dutch. The Dutch were kicked out by the Indonesians in 1963. The eastern part of the island became independent in 1975.
History is complicated; Oceania is an artificial construct. It’s just as artificial as the terms Australasia and Indo-Pacific. The point of the filter is to make life easier for people. So you know that PNG would fall under Oceania or Asia depending on your perspective. Here on Numista, the admins haven’t done it as a political statement. They simply took a call to put it under Asia. I don’t think there would be any problem putting it under Oceania as well. So you can always make a request for it. And of course, you can continue to classify it under Oceania for your own collection. Afghanistan is a similar oddity... is it Central Asia, South Asia or Middle East? People will argue all three ways till the cows come home :)
Hello everyone, first of all congratulate you on this great website and for this new filter by continent. Congratulations to the entire Numista team.
A couple of considerations:
1. In my opinión, "France - French Colonies" should be in North America and not in Africa (The coins of French colonies were intended for general use in the West Indies, Martinique, Guadeloupe and Saint-Domingue (western Hispaniola) until it attained independence as Haiti in 1804).
2. Papua New Guinea is part of Oceania and not Asia. From Wikipedia: "Papua New Guinea(…) is a sovereign state in Oceania that occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea and its offshore islands in Melanesia, a region of the southwestern Pacific Ocean north of Australia.
