Hello!

I'm looking for some help on this Italian Eritrea 5 Lire please. It's been offered to me on Facebook. At first I was delighted as its a lovely piece, but after closer thought central European silver is often highly faked.

I did some research and I'm not convinced by the overall 'softness' look of the coin, along with recessions in both 'E''s of 'Eritrea' along with possibly the 'R' and 'T'. Basically I'm just looking for another opinion please on whether this is possibly a fake or not.

All help is appreciated, thanks

Italian colonial coins aren't my field of interest but I'm almost certain this is fake. The coins details seem to be worn while at the same time there's no signs of circulation on it. Also, as you said, this is a very desirable coin with a high value so it's a good target for counterfeiting. I'm sure members that collect such coins will also find mistakes in the details.
I collect and deal in ancient Roman coin. In case you're looking for affordable ancient coins or need any help with the coins you already have send me a message.

Agreed. For a coin supposedly 129 years old, there should be some signs;
the surfaces are way too smooth and unmarked, therefore fake.

I made these from the original pictures ...

Thank you very much to both who’ve replied! I completely agree, so I’ll give this one a miss. Thanks all

It’s not plagiarising (the article belongs to NGC) but I’ll delete it anyway. A little entitled to say ‘my link’ though. Did you write that or do you own NGC’s parent company? I think not.
Spin it any way you want, It's not right. While you feel entitled to use my thoughts and observations to project yourself as educated about something you knew nothing about 5 minutes prior. Perhaps you should try to have an original thought of your own.
I’ll admit it’s a little scummy to take the link directly from your post and put it here, but:
  1. It’s not yours. You didn’t write it, you don’t hold the rights to it and anyone can find it with a quick google search.
  2. Even if it was yours, I get nothing from posting it here. I’m not making any profit from it. I’m not even getting internet points by posting it. You can’t even like individual comments on Numista, only the whole thread, which was created by someone else.
  3. Why are so angry over it? Firstly, I already deleted it, secondly, as I said it’s not yours, and thirdly, it promotes the wrong kind of mentality on this website. If I find a link that I think could be useful for other people, I share it! They can copy it all they want! Hell, they can even copy images I took and entire posts I wrote! If they monetise them somehow without my knowledge or permission or start claiming that it’s their original work, then we may have a problem. But that doesn’t apply to links. Links are owned by the owners of the website it directs one to. If someone copies a link to some random website that I found and start monetising it, it’s the website’s problem, not mine.

You said: ‘Spin it any way you want. It’s not right’.

So it’s not right to share potentially useful knowledge? It doesn’t matter that the thread was solved ages ago, that link can still be useful for future reference. If replies could be liked/upvoted and I was like farming, that’s wrong. But you can’t like replies so there’s no point. If I was like farming I might as well create a whole new thread instead of reviving an old one.

Either way, you don’t sound like the type to be convinced. The post has already been deleted. Let’s try and resolve this peacefully.
My god child, grow up.
