They printed the banknites themselves aboard the ship? So they basically ripped off the locals? :.

The Marshall Islands still use the American Dollar.

The Marshallese people who lived on Japtan Island accepted these notes as a complementary currency for a limited period of time.

They would have been compensated once these notes were cashed in.
