Should we may be develop some rules/standards so we personally and Numista do not get into real trouble? Enforced overlays? Downgraded resolution (size, dpi)? Ability to zoom-in/enlarge for logged in users only?
I think it is quite important that we, and by that I mean Xavier in particular, should explore the legal standpoint and implications. Funnily enough, at some point while adding my notes to the catalogue, my scanner recognised I was copying banknotes and refused to go any further!
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
You can't scan or print anything with an EURion constellation with most modern equipment.
Some photo editing software does this too.
I have a cheap photoscanner that doesn't care about that though
Rick, quite funny, I actually questioned myself about this yesterday while scanning my notes and tripping over the first one than my scanner refused to scan - this one. While googling for a solution I came across a few resources that were interesting to explore.
As for actual scanning, the checking is not in the scanners (mainly) as far as I understand. Only very advanced scanners (and even more often copiers) with lots of built-in memory (where a program/algorithm can be stored) do recognize these security features and refuse to scan. It is actually either in the driver (software) or scanning software you need to install in order to use a "dumb" scanning machine. Up until now I was using a very basic scanning app I found in Microsoft Store (for Windows 10). Before I was using one that came from Canon (my scanner's manufacturer). Both of these refused to scan that particular note yesterday. But there was one that scanned it fine but unfortunately its free/trial version adds an annoying overlay over the image. It costs $40 US for a standard version (and $70 for advanced) and obviously won't have any overlays. I'm not ready to pay for it... yet...

I made the poor quality picture actually on this page, I made it with my phone as it’s the only picture my scanner refuses to do...
