What is the "Buying value" when I edit an item?

Sorry if this is a stupid newby question - I must have missed it when reading the welcome notes, but when entering a coin in my collection, what do I put in the "Buying value" field? Is it what I paid to acquire the coin? Or what I would want to sell if for? Or...?

Thanks.

You put in what you bought it for not how many people simply put in what they think its worth.
Here is the next problem some people include shipping and or buyers fees other don't.

As you see many problems to be considered and reasons why you shouldn't trust the values you see here to much. Still they have some merit.
So if I just found it, e.g. picked it up off the ground, should I put in 0.00?

And if it was left-over pocket change from a trip, should I just enter the equal value in my home currency (USD$) that I would have paid for exchange at the time?

Many thanks for the kind assistance.

Personally, if I didn't buy it I don't put a value in but put in the private comment for example gift from so and so, swap or inheritance etc.
In the case of pocket change it cost me the FV so I put in e.g. 2€ for a 2€ piece.
Great point on using the comment. I guess I was pretty much on the mark with my assumptions.

Thanks again.
