Should I buy this? It's rare, and only $120!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Rare-2-Euro-Coin-with-S-with-numerous-defects-2002-greece/283827115963?hash=item42156a17bb%3Ag%3AomEAAOSwerZdlxjH&LH_Auction=1
Oh yes! It's a good investment. But a better one is this:
https://www.ebay.it/itm/124086399824
It's very very rare and it's cheaper than it's real value

P.S. Happy April Fools' Day :D

I like how the Greek one has "numerous defect" but the seller can't be bothered to point any of them out.

I think one of the defects is the title.
This one is pretty bad, "very old coins, some back to early 1940s." https://www.ebay.com/itm/Pile-Of-Foreign-Coins-VERY-RARE/293527178951?hash=item4457954ec7:g:ivYAAOSwA2NebCaA

I think I have seen every coin in the pile in cheap bulk lots. I also saw on the eBay page that you can request an NGC "expert opinion" for eBay items for $5 or $10. The linked NGC page indicates you get preliminary opinions on authenticity or authenticity and grade and a discount if you should buy the item and then submit for regular grading. I'd be interested in knowing what members think of such an offer for preliminary opinions. Personally I would not be interested. I think this would not apply to "piles" of coins and you would get a refund.

Is this a new service or have I just not noticed. I have not been on eBay much for the past year or so.

I’ve compiled some of the worst offenders in British coins, in no particular order:

I’ll do another eBay deep dive soon and maybe start a new thread with the best finds. You can do it yourself though. Just search ‘rare coin’ on eBay.co.uk and you will begin your descent into a wretched hive of scum and villainy.
I looked on the Sold page, to show how some buyers have been tricked ...

UK 1 Penny 1971 New Pence [5 Available; 1 Sold] £9.99
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/372992322222

Same coin [ 2 bids] £20.00
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402156246627

UK 2 New Pence 1971 [silver colour = plated] £20.00
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/184304625503

Same coin [1 bid] £20.00
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264724820822

A page of 48 UK 2 Pence coins [17 bids - really?] £29.25
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/353084039380
Token collector [1600-1899] with some coins
To be fair to the seller of the 48 two pence coins, most of them are BU with a few proofs. There is a 1972 in there as well. Not worth £30, but actually a decent listing. A million for a 50p isn’t though.
A 2018 'Paddington at the Station' 50p coin. The mintage exceeds 5,000,000.
You can buy this coin for less than two pounds sterling. Never mind €1,000+.

Not on eBay, but I just came across this.

If I could sell all of mine for that, I’d be filthy rich! Sadly, they’re worth pretty much nothing unless you specifically need one for an Italian coin album.
Some of those British coins rip offs - damn - is there some fad at the moment over 1p and 2p coins of the 1970s that makes them so expensive.

I found a trademe listing for a 1960 UK Crown for $95 NZD (About £50), but that is a bargain next to some fool wanting £2000 for a 1971 2p coin.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Yes, there’s a huge fad at the moment with people pulling the new pence coins out of the change thinking that they’re worth thousands to some random collector that will methodically bid an unnecessarily high price on some random coin. Most of this is fuelled by clickbait articles with titles such as ‘do you have this RARE coin in your change?’. I find it kind it quite off-putting how little they know about coin collecting. I understand that most of them just want the money but in one of the listings for a 1971 penny the coin had been whizzed (cleaned by a rotating wire brush) so hard that the whole coin was covered in circular scratch marks. It was listed as being in ‘extremely good condition’. Please, PLEASE, before you try to sell a coin at least learn a bit about the people you’re trying to sell to.

Etsy is another hive of scum and villainy at the moment. You can still shop on eBay if you’re savvy and careful, but I would just avoid Etsy altogether. As far as I’ve heard, all scams. Just people charging obscene prices for junk silver coins or reselling Chinese counterfeits once they realise they’re fake.
Same is true of some collectible books too. In the absence of additional photographs and a detailed description, the chances are this copy of Quotations From Chairman Mao Tse Tung worth nothing like $1,980 (USD). You can buy a quality 1966 edition, 1st or 2nd print, for less than $100 (USD).

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Quotations-from-Chairman-Mao-Tse-Tung-Pocketbook-Vintage-1st-Edition-1966-RARE-/112427811683
I avoid Ebay like the plague - using Trade Me which is a New Zealand site, that all but discourages foreigners - mainly as our 15% GST and arcane duty rules (Payable on anything over $60NZD which is 35 Euros and 40 USD at most).

Etsy looks like wing wong rubbish - everything very fakeee, and Gumtree is awful too - this was a popular site bulletin board around 2005, but now its junk full of spam type junk like 14 year old hip hop party boys looking for "b####%s" and people selling drugs and wanting dodgy accommodation paid for with sex or drugs.

A certain Chinese site with a name based on a type of Arabian nights story and large cane basket popular in the 80s (The first part is the surname of a famous black boxer) - I can't say it as CCF blocks the word and gives me a warning - but all the imitation coins come off it.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Alibaba is actually listed on the NYSE. Crazy world eh? If it's only about the bottom line why not list Tyrone's Crack 'n' Smack? Low overheads, great profits, committed customer base, no tax exposure.... sounds like a winner. Wall Street needs to rediscover ethics.

The buyer has given good feedback on the transaction: "Great service from a top ebayer".

I think it's a fake - the crispness of the lettering, the jewellery around the neck, missing designer's initials, the size of the gap between the back of the veil and the edge of the coin, etc.

Opinions?

That is SO not a coin - without even looking up the page on here to see what
a genuine coin looks like, the portrait is totally made up. Just that - not even

Gutted that I did not bid to own a piece of history....

You can find great bargains in China and HK. I paid less than $20 USD for most of the editions I bought in China. I think the most I've ever paid for an edition in China was roughly $60 USD.

Europe and North America is another matter.
A reprinted edition of Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse Tung (1990) on sale on eBay for $60.00! If you live outside of the U.S., expect shipping and import charges. Outrageous!

For me, the total would exceed $110 USD. I could buy two 1960s editions plus shipping for the same money.

On a side note though, why does it seem like there are so many nonsense errors proportional to the number of coins listed for euro coins compared to other currencies?
Was looking for Swiss notes on ePay, and under Switzerland I found this:

https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Cent-Franks-Hundert-Franken-Bill/113929573492

It's pretty cheap compared to some other listings in this thread, coming in at a reasonable CA$1,303 (US$1,000).

I feel many of these sellers try to get lots of good feedback selling cheap things so less attentive buyers who don’t read the context of the feedback think the seller is trustworthy and that the price is fair.

On the other hand, how much is that Swiss note actually worth?
The note is actually Belgian - the face value of it is CA$3.82 (GB£2.28, €2.48, US$2.94). This means that the seller improperly categorized it, as 100 Swiss francs is CA$145.09 (GB£84.42, €93.55, US$111.08).

Well, the first one (in your screenshot) is actually $4.99 per coin as it is a set of 2. But even that is crazy!
I guess the ridiculousness is more on the Mint for not offering these rolls (or their now usual "special wrap" at about 2x face) for sale but rather offering the Collector Keepsake Card for $22.95 for $5.40 of face value.

That's insane. When even the mint can't sell for face ×25% it's really no point in getting it, I reckon. It's all about making the big buck. :(
