[Catalogue] Indicate min weight and max weight of a coin instead for coins with variable weight

Hi!

It would be nice to be able to list variable weights for coins, similar to the "No date" feature. Ancient coins and most medieval coins do not have a fixed weight and are listed as such in catalogs.

So I imagine there could be a Variable Weight toggle which would activate two fields for min and max weight:

Weight seems to be a discussion point quite often, as we most often do not know the variability of it.

I have noticed in some threads that people try to make a list of measured weights, to get an idea of the average and the variability. Maybe, just like with the buying values of coins, we could add weights to the coins in our collection. Like that an average weight + standard deviation could be derived for the coins (per year if necessary, as some cointypes have varying weights per year), also taking into account the grade of the coin. Just like with buying values it would be a totally voluntary thing to add these weights, but it could result in quite an interesting dataset.

Just an idea ...B)

No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!
Long-term, this would be interesting indeed, but it might need a bit more work to be implemented.

It might also be difficult to know how accurate the info is. It could work with weights of coins sold at reputable auction houses, but with private individuals, the coins might be fake, clipped, heavily circulated, holed etc... and all these things obviously affect the weight.

I am referring more to being able to include reliable info from catalogs for now.

It just dawned on me that "Diameters" could also have the variable check mark. For ancients, it would be very relevant.

For thickness, I think this feature would be too much though.
I like how the Nomisma databases list examples of each coin type, with a different weight, axis and diameter for each, and average value below.

Xavier, this would be great indeed! I sometimes add this sort of info for rarer coins.

But this is very time consuming and formatting options are limited, so it doesn't look very neat:

And I think the citations are very important, like the museum collections on numismatics.org, or reputable auction houses, so info source can be tracked down.

Hello,
I'm closing this ticket, since the idea is also discussed here: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic116866.html
