I’m on vacation in the UK this week and I just got the most surprising reply when I tried to pay with the old pound coins at the coffee shops in Bath. They just wouldn’t accept them! I had no problem in London spending them though. Is this normal? have these coins been demonetized already??!
A look at any of the coin sheets would have helped you ;)

Visit Leftovercurrency.com, they still exchange old round pounds and even pre decimals.
Any bank should still accept or change your old £1 coins.
However if they're in really nice condition they're worth keeping for swaps as they're quite collectable now.

@Frenchlover > Too many fake coins in circulation ;)
I’m quite surprised indeed. I still have 10£ in those to use up. I didn’t have any issues using them in my first couple days here in London, so I’ll keep pushing them wherever I can haha. They were in my swap list for a long time, but I’ve not been able to exchange them away even though some are commemoratives!
ashlobo,
what did you think of Bath? I live only 8 miles (13Km) from this Roman city. Did you find the coin shop, which is the shop I visit regularly?

I'm just a collector of coins, not a slave to it, unless I am in a coin shop.

Hi Geoff,

no I didn’t go looking for coin shops in bath. Just had enough time for the Roman baths and then a small walk around the town. Bath is absolutely beautiful no doubt! Just wished it didn’t rain as much, put a little dampner on my plan to walk around more. I got caught out in the downpour when I was in the Victoria gardens next to the royal crescent.

Not going to be able to visit charing cross in London either. I might go to coin craft tomorrow since I probably might have to do indoor stuff at the museums if the weather turns ugly. Any recommendations on coin shops to visit in LN?

On another note, i tried pawning off the old pound coins here in Windsor too, but the Starbucks barista was paying attention lol. I did go to the NatWest bank next door and changed out 7£ worth still have another 3£ sitting on my dressing table that needs to go
I know of no shops in Bath that would take the old £1 coins, so the bank is your best option.
Coincraft do coins. It's by the British Museum I think. Being London, prices will be a bit steeper. Best of luck with the coin hunting. Google search might also help, as I know there are a couple of others.
As to the weather? That is why I am on holiday in Spain. Average temperature is 27°C

haha, fair enough! I have too many friends and family here in blimey England. So usually summers are in Canada and the US, fall in UK/Europe and then Christmas-winter is réserved for India to see my parents
The old pound coins were great but too many counterfeits in circulation (3% fakes = millions of counterfeits!).

If you're still in the UK you can drop the old pound coins in tip jars or charity boxes (churches etc.) where they'll eventually end up in the bank...

Indeed I dropped a coupls of them in the donation at the abbey in Bath!

went to coin craft and another coin store yesterday and bought some of the £5 commemoratives I was missing as well as a few of the older crowns. Finally did something numismatics on this trip !
ashlobo,
glad to see you used my advices and went to Coincraft. I expect there were too many choices. Good to see you have increase your collection.
Nothing doing on coin shops here in Spain.

In some cultures they write the dates as "Month-Day-Year"
So it is 15 October....

yes it’s been very fruitful indeed!
Well turns out there is still one place that isn’t a bank which will accept my old pound coins :P

The coins have been officially demonetized yet are still widely accepted in shops. Banks still accept them.

I did pass on a few of them in London initially but then it became harder and harder to spend it at cafes and souvenir shops. Eventually I exchanged the remaining in Metro bank and dropped a couple in a church donation box.
