1944 Belgian Congo Franc identification [solved]

6 posts
I have recently procured a Belgian Congolese Franc of 1944 mint date. As with the 1946 & 1949 mint dated coins I am unable to find any cross(not sure what identification mark is present on the obverse of the coin) on the 1944 coin. The measurements and weight match however. Can anyone shed any light on the fact? Whether the 1944 issue was different from the 1946 & 49 issue?
Some 1944 have the cross in an oval behind the tail, some do not.
This listing has a few for sale like that ...

Thanks for the prompt response ?

So can I assume it's a genuine piece?

 I would say yes, genuine.

P.S. I guess the cross is a mintmark, so I made a request to mention it
on the page. Then I have contacted the referee to make a second
line for 1944 as there is one coin with it and one without it, as shown.
Assuming there is not the same also for the other two years. :)

Hello, my dear Friends,

Thanks to Zac UK to poin me on this topic.
well, this is not mintmark - as we know Mint of Pretoria has mintmark SA.
This a stylized abbreviation of engraver, - Armand Bonnetain ( AB), and it is presents on all coins with elefant - 1,2,5, 50 francs.
Also, on hexagonal 2 franc coin, which was struck in Philadelphia , and not in Pretoria.
There are no coins with/ without this markl, - it is just someties visible clearly, or visible less. For example - this coin from ebay, which is not so worn, but engravers initials almst invisible, although YOu can see a small part of it.

I believe we had a discussion about this mark, and as I remember, I was the author of the topic, but probably i was in other forum..
Anyway, - it is engravers initials. and I will add description in our cat.
Thank You for Your attention, dear colleagues.
Yours
david
