I am thinking this is Japanese. I have no clue what it is though. It is an interesting design I haven't seen before, a lot of tokens tend to be rather plain and utilitarian. I wonder if it is a gaming piece of some sort.

Definitely a Chinese token or so, but yes it has similarities to the 5 yen design:
