In 1863 the cent actually was copper-nickel. The usual bronze started in 1864.

1863 penny on nickel ..if I messed up o well but I had my penny cleaned hear it is ..sorry about doing this twice

It is pretty far gone, and not a rarity, so no harm in cleaning it.
I guess it spent many many years in the ground.
