Help identifying Rome Constantius II Era coin

6 posts
Hello

I recently purchase a Rome coin at a coins show. They said it was Constantius II Era coin but i could not find the coin in Numista catalog. Can someone help me identify this coin so that I could add it to Numista if not already available?

Cheers
I cannot help fully but it seems to me the obverse legend on your coin is CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB CAES. This indicates a Constantine not a CONSTANTIVS. The reverse legend of your coin (which starts with CAESAR) does not show in Volume VII of my copy of RIC, but it does contain your obverse legend above. Volumes VI AND VIII don't contain a reference to your obverse legend

Regrettably, I lack volume 10 in my copy of RIC. I can't be sure, but It may contain a reference to your coin. Trust this helps a bit...

Appreciate your quick response LHNUMIS!!

I will keep researching this while waiting for others comments as well.

This is definitely Constantine II, son of Constantine I "the Great", as "Caesar", i.e. before he became Augustus with his two brothers in September 337.

VOTIS V refers to the Quinquennalia, which were celebrated at the start of the fifth year of reign. The coin could be anticipating the Quinquennalia or celebrating them. Constantine II was made Caesar on March 1st 317 (aged only 1), so the coin dates probably to early 321 or a little before.

Look for RIC VII 222 on this Wildwinds page.

Camerinvs appears to have nailed it...bravo. Couldn't make out the balance of the reverse inscription or I might have done so.
Awesome Camerinvs and thank you both for helping in identifying this Roman coin for certain.
