Okay, So i got an offer to buy this coin. Its a super cool coin, M. Volteius M. f. 78BC Denarius, somewhat rare as far as I know, since this moneyer was active very short period.

But it has a quite obvious damage. Do you think its a counterstamp/mark?

It is damage. A counterstamp would need to be meaningful in some way.

Thanks a lot. Seller did not know, so thats why I asked. Its a kind of strange damage, obviously from a serious blow ? then....

How does this kind of megadent hurt the value? To me its almost sort of appealing when its this "monstrous"
There's one thing that makes me doubt my own comment: the fact that there is not much flatness on the reverse, only some in the columns and in the center where you'd expect to see the statue of the god(dess).

Whatever may be the case, it's a problem coin and it hurts my eyes looking at it. Personally I would rather have a nice, problem-free common coin for the same money. If you really want it, I can't imagine it's worth more than ¼ of its value without the damage.

Just my opinion!

Thank you very much for your insight. I have decided not to buy this coin, especially since its most likely not a counterstamp. Thanks again for your help :)
