Figured I might have had a find out of an ebay purchase.  Couldn't figure out what it was.  I could find the gold 8 escudos in Numista's catalog, but nothing black with an A engraved in it.

FINALLY I found it.  http://www.coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=1281&main_ct_id=42 (Photo is courtesy of them as well,) with a brief description.  If this damn piece of junk was ALL I had bought, I would have been insanely upset.

Figured I'd Share.
So you bought a fake gold coin?

Well, it's contemporary so it's not that bad. If it was a modern counterfeit it'd be no more than a buck.

nah.  Came in a 6 pound bag of world coins.  I just got a little excited at first about a 1700's coin in a "take-your-chances" purchase.  It would have been awesome if it was real though...
Still though, it's probably from the era.

"Contemporary counterfeit" means that the coin was counterfeited around that time. Modern counterfeit means it was made recent and is usually harder to tell from being fake. So what you've got there is a piece of history. Not bad!
