How come on this site and most other sites/world they use the British flag to indicate English-speaking. They should use the English St George's cross flag as the symbol, because Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have their own language even though they mainly choose to use Englands?
Good question. Indeed Scotland, Wales and N. Ireland have their own languages but now that they are all part of the United Kingdom their official first language is English. You will almost never find a Scottish, Welsh or N. Irish person that can't speak English fluently.
According to : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language it says England originally spoke english.
So i guess you are right it should be the English flag & without the USA flag.
I think the flag should be left alone. I think it is a little pedant to change this. It is a representation of the English language forum. St. George's flag was used by the Genoans I believe, before it was recognised as a symbol of England. The flag of Great Britain is internationally recognised.
To put the English flag up to represent the English Language would be similar to putting a Soviet Union flag to represent Russian. The recognised country is now United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, not just England. So the UK flag is more accurate I feel =]
And if you mean why half USA flag on Numista, I think it's just there for the Americans to know it's English Language in case some don't know what country the Union Flag was from. =]
If there stupid enough to not know the british flag id bet coin collecting would never crossed there mind!
what will happen when britain breaks up into seperate countries which i sadly now think will happen in a few years?
can we have the English flag?

even if i was not british/usa it is the spoken word of most of the world
The british flag is more correct because pretty much all english speaking countries have or have had it on their flag, like NZ, Australia, Canada used to, FIji, etc all have the union Jack.
Quote: bam777I think we can end this discussion here. I think the points raised have been dealt with and we need not go further in this line of enquiry.
Why should we end this discussion? You are wrong to flex your muscles so often. The discussion should end when the last member makes his or her final comment. There is nothing wrong to have differing opinions. There is a problem when free speech is being discouraged. I do not have a problem with using this flag to represent English, but I do have a real problem when members of the Numista Team tries to prevent free speech even if it is sometimes just silly venting.

Yep, nailed it right there.
It never was the English Empire or more recently the English Commonwealth. In both cases the term was British although as an African co-worker pointed out to me recently, he grew up belonging to the British Empire but spoke English.
The confusion then is easy to understand although it still sets my teeth on edge when I hear an American tell me I speak that "British English".
For anyone who still has strong feelings about this, may I point out that the English flag of St George is a component of the Union Jack so it is actually being displayed anyway.
I win!
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
Coinsoldier,
It's even more funny when they complain about inactivity or low activity on Numista forum after such the inconsiderate, offensive comments. Thank you for bringing up this point.

Most people are too polite to speak up for freedom of speech. scceda, I am glad that you appreciated my comment. After spending most of my adult life fighting for the freedoms many of us enjoy, I get really offended when those in positions of power try to prevent free discussion. It is ironic that this particular forum is called FREE DISCUSSION.

i agree with you coinsoldier - a lot a people forget about what vets have done for freedom !!!
I also agree with coinsoldier; it did seem like Numista was saying stop the chat.
The best thing I saw was an American telling a Englishman that he wasn't speaking English correctly. Americans can be so funny sometimes
