Romania is an interesting case study in banknote history; their notes reflect the country's contemporary geopolitical status quite often!
From it's independence from the Ottoman Empire until WWII, Romania was ruled by a Francophile elite, and this is reflected in Romanian banknotes from the early 20th century:
Designed by a French engraver and printed by the Banque de France (as you can see by paper quality).
During WWII, Romania fell into the German sphere of influence; that combined with wartime neccessity led to the creation of more spartan notes:
And after WWII, the country became part of the Eastern Bloc, and became a communist one party state; thus placing it firmly into the Soviet sphere, leading to the Communist-era notes posted earlier!
