Identify this 1840 Rupee please

5 posts
I feel rather embarrassed about posting this even. I'm such a noob when it comes to Indian coins.

This is an 1840 rupee, dot after date, 19 berries, and I THINK it's pridmore 42, GK80 as it has a crescent in the left side of the ribbon as the privy mark. Could somebody confirm please? Calcutta mint? (Diam is around 31.1) And what's with the reverse die cracks? I've not spotted these on any others. And are those small or large diamonds?

Any help appreciated!

Ps. Is it worth anything?

Beautiful coin, wonderful condition, patina, and history. Yes, 1840 Victoria rupees certainly come in a bewildering number of varieties.

Comparing with the photos at

https://www.coincommunity.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=71760

it looks to me like the diamonds are small.

So for this one, with 19 berries, dot after date, no initials on neck, crescent on left side of ribbon, and small diamonds, I'm leaning toward KM 457.3, Bombay mint. KM doesn't list the dot after date or crescent for this, but these might be assumed. I'm not an expert on this type of coin and could be mistaken.

Personally I would grade this XF, and it's KM 457.3 the book price listed in "South Asian Coins and Paper Money" (2013) is $85.
Wrong diameter for Bombay mint I think, damn these are confusing!

ps. Thanks :) I'm just going through my 'collection' as in my areas in the room that have been unchecked and disorganised for ages and finding all sorts of stuff that needs identified and catalogued properly, slowly working on it!
Yes, Calcutta if 31.1 mm diameter. There are not thorough enough descriptions in KM publications to distinguish all varieties. There's some more info at

http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Countries/East_India_Company.htm

which may list your variety under Calcutta 1840 rupees, but it doesn't give coin identifying numbers from KM or elsewhere.

I think both with dot and without dots with raised initials may be of Madras mint. This is my viewpoint
