Does anyone else have a collection of elongated coins, or is it just an American thing? All the ones I have seen seem to be U.S. pennies, but my collection extends into world coins - which I don't see as often. Here is what I have so far ...

I've got a few of these amusement pieces. I don't collect them though! I have one for LlanfairPG (longest place name in Wales) a couple of I love you's. I think.
Strictly speaking you are deffacing the Queen in making one of these! (Here in the UK.)
i guess im defacing honest abe too i usually use the ones that are the most damaged or dirty they tend to supply the most detail
ive tried gb pennys they always get stuck they must be bigger then u.s. ones though ive had a half cent go through and a victoria 3 pence that was holed. is it illigal to deface a canadian penny in england.it just reminds me when i was a little boy and we use to put pennies on the railroad track then wait for a train and come back and find them all smashed
I live in the UK and I have collected a few from here on there when I've been on Holiday, Blackpool, Warwick Castle, Alton Towers, and The great north Museum Hancock. I also have a couple from Florida, Gatorland, and Disneyland
My collection of commemorative medals and tokens.

How do you make one of those? Some time ago I saw a person putting coins on the railroad tracks but I do not stopped to see the result of that prank Was it for that?
How do you make one of those?

Here in the US many amusement places have special machines where you can make one if you pay 25-50 cents. You turn a handle and make an elongated "coin" from the regular penny.

Is it like a tradition? or just what for having a different piece?

Sorry, I can't answer this question because I'm an immigrant myself. Perhaps native-born Americans can help you.

It's not a tradition, these machines are normally just something for holiday makers to get a neat little souvenir from. We have the same kind of machines here in the UK for 1 penny coins =]
yes they just roll the coins flat and usually mark an engraving of whatever place it is for a souvenir to remember you were there

Here coins are used as souvenirs in  acrylic key chains, maps of the country, and so on. They are also used in some funeral traditions. Do you have a picture showing clearly the final result of the coin? I would like look at it.
