I was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible to date Japanese banknotes from their serial numbers. I bought some on a recent trip and am trying to learn more. I've tried Googling but can't find any relevant info.
Kind of. A serial number could be A123456A and AB123456A, and the colour of the serial number could vary, like if it's black, brown, or blue. I think that's the only way, because I don't think they print a date on the notes.

Hi there,
If you are talking about Japanese notes that has link to dates, then it's not possible. I have never done that before. But if you are trying to say understand these notes are circulated when, then below the link might give you a detail. I am not sure what are you trying to achieve.

I found a reference site that gave me a good idea what years they were from. Might not be exact but good enough for cataloguing them.
Oh, interesting. Care to share the link? I also collect some Japanese old banknotes.

Thank you so much. Intinally I thought that was not possible. Seems like I have a new route to explore.
