This is a closeup of the reverse of a 1944, 50 cents coin, Canada. According to the Charlton Standard Catalogue of CANADIAN COINS, Volume 1, Numismactic Issues 2018, 71st edition, page 185 there are three varieties of this coin. See immediately below.
Notice that the horse's hoof touches or is very near the tail of the second 4.
This is a 50 cents coin I caught at an auction recently and I would like to have anyone's opinion. Which variety does it fall under? It seems to me that the second four is "dropped" since the hoof is above the tail of the second 4, not adjacent to it.
What say you?
The "low 4" variety is not listed in Charlton, but it's not the only case of a variety known otherwise but not listed in there. You'll find that it is listed and illustrated elsewhere, such as on this dealer's page:
I'm very tempted to get this catalogue which lists a lot more varieties. I'm not a big collector of varieties, but It's good to know when you actually have a scarce variety. I remember the days when the Charlton did not list all the varieties of the 1858 10¢. It took me many years to find out that my XF 1858 10¢ was the 5/5 variety... which added $100 at once to its value.
