1956 East Africa 50 cents - location of mint mark?

7 posts
I just picked up one of these and the mintmark is really hard to find, I just wanted to check if I was looking in the right place:

If this is the right place, then it is really hard to find. If I look really hard under magnification and at the right angle to the light, it looks as if I can just about make out a 'KHN' but is it normal for it to be so hard to find?

Yes; here is a (different year, for example) 1958 H with mark clearly visible in that place ...

You looked at the right place, but sometimes those are very difficult to see, indeed.
...you can run,  but you can't hide...
I can't see it clearly enough on the picture, but under the right angle of light you indeed can see more. And if you don't have any doubts then it's really KHN, you'll have a nice coin:

Thanks all for your replies. It is quite clear that nothing can be seen straight on (as in the 1200dpi scan) but there is not a 'no mintmark' option for that year. When I use my loupe and get the coin at the right angle against the light, I can just about make out a very weak H with spaces either side that could be a very faint K and N with a vivid imagination. The coin itself is slightly let down by some minor scratches to the obverse but since nearly all my collection sit in the album reverse side up, it's really not an issue and I'm happy enough. :)
