France 5 Franc 1847A

Hi guys,

I am in the process of contacting the seller of this coin (France 5 Francs KM# 749.1). My challenge is of course; what grade would you say it is, and what should I offer for it (or should I leave it alone? :) ). This wonderful forum may have some meaning about it?

Id call that VF. US$45 would be fair.

$25USD in VF- it also looks to have been cleaned, so would take that into consideration, as well.
here is a nicer one for $40

I agree, VF and cleaned. It depends on how bad you want it but I would say $25 would be my maximum offer.
Hello,

I also agree with all your grades, VF for me too- maybe it's just being in France, but this is an extremely common coin in fairly standard condition.

Le Franc gives it's value at 20 euro but even then I am not sure I would pay that for it here; I have seen stacks of them being sold at 15 euros each:

If you really want one, I have one I could sell you for just 20 euro. ;)
Thanks all for great feedback! I wonder...this is VF and cleaned. Are there uncleaned AU or better for sale and what kind of sums would they demand from me?

I love these old silver coins and often I dont mind it being a common coin as long as its a "looker". And of course, the price must be sensible.
Do you want a 1847 A, or would you be happy with any date/mintmark from this coin type? In either case you can look up cgb.fr's archives for a reasonable comparison about prices:

Anyway, for most of these big European 19th century silver crownsize coins, they are often extremely common in grades VF and lower and therefore very cheap, but anything above that and you can expect premiums, because the rate of survivors that stayed in that condition is low. 45 euro would be a very good price for a 5 Francs Louis Philippe in SPL (XF+ or AU).
