I am in the process of contacting the seller of this coin (France 5 Francs KM# 749.1). My challenge is of course; what grade would you say it is, and what should I offer for it (or should I leave it alone? ). This wonderful forum may have some meaning about it?
Thanks all for great feedback! I wonder...this is VF and cleaned. Are there uncleaned AU or better for sale and what kind of sums would they demand from me?
I love these old silver coins and often I dont mind it being a common coin as long as its a "looker". And of course, the price must be sensible.
Do you want a 1847 A, or would you be happy with any date/mintmark from this coin type? In either case you can look up cgb.fr's archives for a reasonable comparison about prices: https://www.cgb.fr/archive,modernes.html
Anyway, for most of these big European 19th century silver crownsize coins, they are often extremely common in grades VF and lower and therefore very cheap, but anything above that and you can expect premiums, because the rate of survivors that stayed in that condition is low. 45 euro would be a very good price for a 5 Francs Louis Philippe in SPL (XF+ or AU). https://www.cgb.fr/5-francs-iiie-type-domard-1847-paris-f-325-14-sup60,fmd_068599,a.html
