Help valuate two 8 Escudos gold coins - with imperfection

5 posts
Hello,
I have these two coins that I believe were used at some point as part of a pendant, judging by the impressions on the rim, best seen in last photo. Could someone help with a rough valuation, would the existing damage have a big impact on value? Is it worth certifying / grading such coins?
Thank you

Welcome to Numista. Just my humble opinion.
First thing to do is try and verify that they in fact genuine and .901 and .875 gold repectively and not fakes. Weigh them, magnet test, measure diameter, etc or take it to a coin shop for help in determining those issues. In short yes, any alteration potentially diminishes value. I believe the first one is Mexican although the mintmark ( should be Mo ) bothers me for some reason because I cant see it so well with the photo provided The second one I believe to be from Chile (So). Slabbing and grading coins can get pricey and is a judgement call and you may never get that investment back. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces15008.html https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces35196.html .Personallly, I would only pay a small premium above melt value if genuine. Others may offer more but that is their perogative, Good luck.
No, sorry. I got my magnifyer out and see that it is actually the Madrid mint and this one and not Mexican. https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces14836.html

Thank you for your replies, much appreciated.
I went ahead and followed your advice, at first glance these seem genuine, but I not an expert, I will probably find a place in London and ask for an expert opinion if genuine or not.

It weighs and measures right so that is a good sign. Just remember, there are a lot of fakes out there so be careful.
