Trouble identifying napoleon coin

6 posts
Hi there, im new to the site and am enjoying cataloging my coin collection here.

I am however having trouble identifying one coin. Only the second half of the date is visable, the name and the word centimes.

Any help would be most graciously welcomed

Thanks in advance

Hello and welcome!

Your coin is likely a 10 centimes coin from Napoleon III's reign, with his 1st "bare" head type:

Although depending on its diameter it could also be the 5, 2 or (unlikely) 1 centime(s):

Thank you CassTaylor for both the welcome and the help.

I did originally look at some of those coins, but the markings around the date dont seem to match with the images on the catalog x.

The marking to the right of the date seems to be a hammer and pick, but on the other images its either a pointing hand (i think) or what appears to be a lamp of some sort.....

Or is that just me being slightly dense? z)

Thank you again for the help and the very quick response!

Not to worry, those can be pretty confusing- that's the privy mark (kind of like a pictographic signature) of the director of the branch of the mint this coin was minted at (in this case, the B mintmark indicates Rouen). The pick and shovel is the privy mark of the director of Rouen mint between 1853 and 1857:

Coins minted at other mints or by the same mint in a different period of time will bear different mint director privy marks.
That's brilliant!
Thank you so much for explaining that to me, makes much more sense now :)
Welcome to Numista!

The engraver is Albert-Désiré Barre (1855-1879) : anchor left of the date.
It looks like 5 centimes, I think to see a Q opposed to the left bottom arrow

Ir am I not awake yet? 8~
