Hi,
according to Numista catalog, this coin is Medal Alignment:

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2233.html

I have two of this coins and one is medal alignment (1997) and the other one is coin alignment (1999).
Is that a rare coin or just a mistake in the catalog?

Thanks!
Hi,

all my 1 rand coins are with medal alignment, like ALL the other coins from South Africa. If yours is really with a coin alignment, then it's a variant, rare or not I wouldn't know.

In this alignment French coin:

there are some dedicated lines (year 1991, 1992, 1993) to a medal alignment variant.

I think the same would be indicated in km 164 1 rand coin.

Anybody know how to do this change?

Thanks!
South African coins are always in medallic alignment.

Anything from South Africa that is not in medallic alignment can be classed as mint errors caused by dies being misaligned in the coining presses at the South African Mint in Pretoria.

Misaligned dies error coins from South Africa are extremely common - & the same thing applies to the 2015 coins of South Sudan & the Zimbabwean Bond Coins, which were also struck at the South African Mint as well.

With the French coins having separate mintages for the different alignments, those different alignments were (more than likely) intentional.

Errors are not intentional, which seems to be the case with this South African piece. And it would be best to keep errors as personal comments on the year-lines. ;)
