Likely, I am afraid to be a forgery. That is one of the things that forgers don't think about and helps us to tell coins apart.

Agreed it is a fake. I have seen various fake pound coins over the years - mostly like yours when the date on one side is not correct to the reverse design. Sometimes the forgers get both right and instead put the wrong lettering around the edge, or the portrait is turned from vertical in relation to the reverse.

Here is a 1988 one I have - the design on the reverse should be the crowned shield, but instead has the 1983 reverse, though edge lettering DECUS ET TUTAMEN is correct for 1988.
