thatcoin

Just a general warning to any who use eBay to buy their coins. Be careful when dealing with the Seller who goes by the name of "thatcoin". He joined eBay as a Seller about a year ago and is from Australia. It seems he deals mostly in Australian coins.

Why should you be aware of this Seller?

He sells item at auction. If the auction goes off for a ridiculous price (i.e.: you got a bargain) chances are you will be told your item was stolen, lost in the mail, or is out of stock. You will however get a refund.

Why am I telling you this here? Why not report him to eBay?

I did. But given the order was cancelled, I am unable to leave any kind of feedback for this person. So he can continue to cancel his auctions that go for a song, and he retains his 100% positive feedback rating.

So what did I bid on?

A 1922 KGV Australian Penny given as being "very rare" from the Calcutta mint, and a 1921 Australian Penny that was minted here in Australia but with the Indian die for the obverse (also given as rare). I won the auction and paid the grand price of AU $9.90 for both these coins (I was the only bidder). 5 days later he cancels my order and when I query the cancellation he tells me he was robbed.

I am sick and tired of this happening again and again and so this is my way of taking a stand. Beware the eBay Seller known as "thatcoin".

That's why I don't buy anything off eBay or any auction site for that matter.
Thanks for the heads up. I do buy coins every now & then off of eBay, but my general rule of thumb is, if the price is too good to be true, than there is something wrong, and move on. There are quite a few good sellers of coins on eBay, but you just have to know what you are looking for and ask if the coin is real or replica. For example, a few months back I got a few "silver" pandas from somebody in China, and the price was around $10. Description said silver blah blah, but when I asked the seller, I was told they are silver "plated". I bought them anyway cause I can't afford to buy the real thing :D

I just did a search on this Australian seller on eBay, but nothing is turning up. Perhaps this seller got taken off.
You don't have money for a simple silver buillion but buy a fake worth a few cents for 10 dollars? (8

On topic, I predominantly use eBay for coin acquisition, just use your common sense like already said if it sounds too good it's probably not worth it. Buy only if good pictures of both sides are provided, better still all other important metrics, diameter and weight too.

Most important know what you want and how it should look like.

I got 3 different years for $10...yeah perhaps I got ripped off, but hey they still look pretty cool :D
The Seller known as "thatcoin" is still trading on eBay. What annoyed me most was that just one day after telling me my two coins had been stolen and so that was why he cancelled my order, he had them up for auction again though this time starting at $11.00 AU. I sent him a nasty email and of cause got no replay, so... meh.

As for replicas, I bought a fake 1930 KGV Australian One Penny from eBay. The wording in the add left out any mention of it being a replica but a very careful search and a very good look at the pictures showed the truth. I paid $50.00 for it. I mean.... It's not like I could ever hope to own the real thing. One was on eBay just a few days ago. Starting bid was $9,500.00 :8D

Besides, whenever I do pull out my Australian coins to show anyone, it's that fake 1930 Penny that gets all the "Oooo"s and "Ahhhh"s.
