Hello!

I am very new to coin collecting, I ended up stumbling across some Silver 1 rupees and found them really interesting. I'd like to start a collection but after browsing a bit I feel as though I'm jumping into the deep end, has anyone got any advice for a beginner, or what type/era of coin to focus on to begin with? Being quite young I haven't got much of a budget, so any advice for doing this on a small budget too would be great. I'm from India, if that makes much difference.

Thank you!
Welcome to Numista! :8D

I'd start off by affirming this; age is no barrier at all to building a nice collection, and if you play your cards right, neither is budget.

It sounds like you have a bunch of the old British India, or Princely states silver rupees; building off that, I suggest you begin with old, British India coinage. Most types are extremely common in affordable grades (a few euros each) even in Europe, so I imagine in India this is more so the case. Try starting a type collection (collecting at least one of each) of the coins here: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/inde_britannique-3.html#c_inde_britannique244
(ignore the gold ones for now! ;))

Feel free to post any coins you need help identifying or authenticating here:

Good luck!
Welcome!

CassTaylor has some great advice. I know it can be a daunting passion to pick up.

There are lots of cheap or free ways to explore what you like. You'll see many coins even on these forums that you love or hate. You can get little bundles of international coins for very cheap. They're low value but a perfect way to explore and learn without much risk. Just use your interest and be open to the experience and learning more about what you're looking at and you'll do just fine.

Looking forward to seeing you around the forum!
Welcome!

Everyone has different ideas about what/how/why to collect. I am in the group that recommends collecting something that gives you pleasure rather than as a financial investment. If you collect what you like, it will give you enjoyment even if the value changes.

One thing to be aware of is that sometimes new collectors think all coins are supposed to be shiny. However, cleaning coins usually reduces their visual appeal and value. It can expose more of the coin to the elements or add scratches. It can also give the coin a bizarre unappealing coloration.

I hope your collection brings you a lot of satisfaction, and I hope that Numista brings you new friends and helpful information.
