It's off topic but I want to share the pain and shame we Brazilians are feeling for the destruction by fire last night of the National Museum and ~90% of its collection, which is invaluable not only for our country but for the world and all mankind.

Probably everyone who likes history even a little bit is shocked by the destruction of millions of pieces of natural and human history.
I heard about it just now on Reddit.

It's always an absolute shame when an irreplaceable piece of history is lost forever, much less when it's 20 million or so pieces. :(
Go away with your crocodile tears giobruno.

Wasnt the museum like with no money and in need of serious repairs but nobody cared??

So i dont feel any remorse with brasil loseing their heritage after treating it like dirt.

Some of us really cares about history and science.

But unfortunately no politician cares (and 90% of the population).
I would have expected this to happen to some relatively unimportant museum where there is a resource crunch and general apathy to preserving its history, but not THE main museum which was also the Royal Palace at one point. I did know Brazil has been on the down slide in recent years; just did not réalisé things were this bad in the country

Your comment is really uncalled for. This is a human loss. Doesnt just affect Brazilians. It affects all mankind. Shame on you for having such a lax attitude towards pieces of history gone forever. It irrelevant if money was invested to protect the museum or not. That in it of itself is a part of the tragedy.

Hello
Yes, it is a big tragedy. All comments of stupid people and politicians-are now useless. Time can not be returned.
It is a loss for all the inhabitants of the planet.

Morning every body,

I am not sure that such comments bring anything to the debate. Critisizing is easy but slightly inapropriate.

Unless you have personnaly done something with your life that entrust you to speak as a reference, of course.

Such a destruction of historical artefacts is a tragedy that we all share with Brazil.

Full stop, Affe tot, Klappe zu.

I do not lock the thread so that we can all share our sympathy with Giobruno.

I am heartbroken by this fire. Other than that I don't know what to say. Hopefully something can be salvaged from this, if only we all look to our own Museums and National Treasures with perhaps renewed eyes as to the real value at stake.
Collector of Third Reich coins (1933 - 1946), and Australian coins.
Not swapping at this time.
Sorry if a country has enough money to spend on olympic games but none for a museum then its a joke.

Honourable, wellknown Mr. Trump has a special term for countries like that.

I also want to point out that there is something like "numista opinion police" lurking around. So be careful if you disagree on certain topics and feign some regret in public.

Dear Muenzenhamster,

I guess you are mentionning me when you refer to the "numista opinion police".
  1. It is actually my assignment as moderator to ensure the compliance to the forum rules; I remind them to you in the above attached link.
  2. It is moreover, as a normal person, to point out unacceptable behaviours from other normal persons.

I am nevertheless interested in the constructive arguments you could develop on any issue; feel free to open a new thread and please stop polluting this one.

I know what you're talking about and you're right, it sounds like a joke but unfortunately it's true. There were protests in 2014 before the World Cup because of this.
Just please take it easy, there's still some enlightened people here.

We had decades of politicians directing public money for the wrong things.

And what happened to the museum is only a part of the greater crisis ongoing on the Rio de Janeiro state.

@Kipsley One thing or another survived the fire, but it's too early to know what. What we know is that the Bendegó meteorite is intact at the entrance, but the Luzia skull and the mummies are thought to be lost.
Here's the resume of what we know so far: https://g1.globo.com/rj/rio-de-janeiro/noticia/2018/09/04/o-que-se-sabe-sobre-o-incendio-no-museu-nacional-no-rio.ghtml
How heartbreaking, and what a loss! Thank you for sharing the info, Giobruno!

Yes hopefully its a wake up call for the public. I personally think brazil will get affected by argentinia and venezuelas economic meltdown and there will be a "full reset".

About Argentina, it haven't affected us directly yet. About Venezuela, we are already having a refugee crisis in the border cities of Roraima state (with federal government doing little as always).

A full reset is not a bad idea, we need it in some areas.

Only time will tell what will happen, but there's always a hope for better days. Pelé said yesterday that "there is nothing more fertile than ashes". Life goes on and we must rise from the ashes.
@GioBruno. I, as most people I know, are deeply saddened by the loss for obvious reasons. Unfortunately there will be a few people who dont fully appreciate the loss to the world and those people always seem to be the most opinionated but fortunately they are the minority. Some things are simply priceless and we mourn the loss too.

+1

Very well said, I couldn't agree more with everything there.

It genuinely saddens me to think that I'll never lay eyes physically on the majority of the museum's exhibits now.

Do you realize a good amount of history that cannot be replaced is gone?
It's just terrible, what a devastating loss. Hopefully other large museums and archives will at the very least take this as a prompt to check their own systems and safety measures.

Really a tragic event.
Giobruno, my heart goes out to you and the rest of Brazil. (Although truly this is an international loss.) I had the pleasure of spending a few days in Rio de Janeiro last year for work and I thought it was a beautiful and fascinating city. I have difficulty reading about the fire because the magnitude of the loss is too much to take in. There was so much knowledge there that is lost forever now. Old recordings of now-extinct languages, etc.
