Hello Numismatists!

So i went shopping because it's a holiday around here and that's people do.

Picked up this 8 R from one of my regular suppliers, it was dark and i didn't see it well and we built up trust over the course of my months (can always return) but today i looked it at it, and something is wrong with it but i can't put it in words, it reminds me of the fake 1780 US dollar for some reason.

It doesn't stick to the magnet and i did the PING test but it's not sounding right (It doesn't last very long)

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

Hello,

I honestly cannot say for sure from those photos; you should take more focused ones (and turn the reverse upside down please!).

Sorry about that!

No problem! :` You'd be surprised at the amount of cretins who don't upload better/reverse photos even after repeated requests.... 8~

From the (much better!) new photos I'm actually leaning more towards saying it's real rather than fake... I've seen real 8 reales coins with similar surface problems.

Can someone explain to me why this girl isn't perma-banned? It's not like this is an isolated slip of the tongue now is it?
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

That's not the edge for a genuine Spanish 8 Reales....

They have a circle and square pattern, including the late 19th century counterfeits and Sheffield steel counterfeits.

Hmm, that's a good catch.

I never even noticed the edge picture myself.

First things to look at [when looking for fakes] after weight are edges, denticles, and rims and then the fields. They usually tell you far more than the details.
Thank you all for your input.

Is that a red flag, or just vandalism?

It's just a blatant fake unfortunately.
@oggy

Thanks, those tips you posted there just now, I really appreciate!

I already knew about rims and denticles, but assumed that unless we're talking about the crudest fakes or coins with detailed edges, it's not as important to check the edge.
Although i never held or saw a real one before, i had this bad feeling about it. I shall return it to the vendor.

Thanks all for your help.

BTW after i checked the edge it's not even proper reeding.
