I'm trying to get more money for my numismatic hobby (among other things) and I've decided to start cannibalising my own collection for some extra cash; I've recently exchanged a bunch of modern banknotes from other countries that are still legal tender (no big loss, since if you follow the "country per day" threads you know I only focus on collecting old, vintage notes).
But now that's run out as an option and I look at my still legal tender coins... in particular I have a bunch of British £1 and £2 coins, as well as quite a few modern Canadian, Australian and US dollars that I'd like to exchange for a reasonable amount of cash. Only trouble is most currency exchangers don't deal in coins at all, and I want to know if any currency changers who do (preferably within the EU)? I understand not accepting pennies, but I'm kind of hoping someone will accept the more high-value coin denominations.
Don't know where you are, but this firm accepts coins, even old pre decimal UK stuff, https://www.leftovercurrency.com/
Must add that I have never used them.
Leftovercurrency.com is very good, I have used it many times. Euromoney24.com is another, but they have focused in pre euro currencies only. If talking about brick and mortar places, Forex Bank buys some of the bigger denomination coins at least here in Finland:
This site is only in Finnish, but the table shows currency codes and denominations which they accept as a coins. Every now and then they drop off coins from the list and maybe in some day it's totally gone. They have branches also in other Nordic Countries but not sure if they take coins there.
Quote: "ashlobo"PM me if you want to offload UK, US, Canadian coins. I can pay you the equivalent face value. But you’d have to foot the postage (within europe).
@Ashwin
Thanks! That's very kind of you to offer, but I'm feeling especially stingy about the postage... I'll certainly think about it.
As for Leftovercurrency.com, it certainly looks good, I'll be trying that out this weekend. Too bad they seem to require postage at the customer's expense as well...
No worries, I’d have you send them to Germany or Belgium and could have sent you the money via PayPal. I travel enough to the US and UK to be able to use the loose change or use it for my swapping purposes.
in anycase, I’d have given you the current market rate, I imagine that website will cut a commission besides giving a very bad rate
Thanks to everyone that replied; but just to make sure, does anyone know of any physical money changers (banks, airport currency exchange etc.) that accept higher value coins?
If it's a negative I'll consider the other methods.

I know here in the UK the bureau de change in most places will take 1 and 2 euro coins. I am not sure about anything else though!

Thanks, but I have the opposite problem; I need a place to change British £1 and £2 coins for Euros in the Eurozone.
@Ashwin
After looking at Leftovercurrency.com I think you're right on rates. I'll look around some more before considering some of the kind offers I've gotten (either here or in PM) to exchange circulating coins. Thanks everyone!
I tried out the Fourex online calculators and compared them to the true rates of conversion from xe.com - it seems it is just over 9% for a fee, comparable to the fee for the coin counting machines over here..
