As I am a football referee, I will be following the officials, how they officiate the games and how much they will rely on the VAR system.
I am from England, so hope my home team does well, but officials and the respect they get from players ect will be my main focus.
Tennis, and cycling (sometimes swimming) are more my thing when it comes to sports, but I have been bombarded by the usual stuff online from my more football-obsessed friends more and more recently. Couldn't care less, but I bear with them
Mostly for Les Bleus and the England team, but I think I also saw something for Australia related to the World Cup floating about on Twitter today.
Today's match should scare FIFA into reversing the expansion of the World Cup to 48 teams in 8 years. Europe will get some more teams in which are of a higher quality than many of the current ones but essentially, envision 10-12 more Saudi Arabia's in the tournament and then cringe at how unwatchable most of it will be. That was one of the most feeble performances I can recall.
Germany (But I have a feeling that we are not quite as strong as 4 years ago, so I think the winner will be someone else).
in the past I always watched every single WC game but now with a baby and my job its less easy to do

I am a proud football fan of Liverpool FC. Now that it is the World Cup, I hope Mo Salah does well even if the group does not advance to the round of 16; best of luck to Sadio too for his country. Not really a big fan of England, to be honest.
Countries I think will not win the finals:
Germany - two in a row? Not quite.
Spain - changing the manager at the eve of the cup disrupts the team morale
Brazil - have a sixth sense-ish feeling that they will get knocked out by some underdog
England - same as Brazil
Belgium - same as England
Russia - out at the quarter-finals at most
So, I put my faith in:
France - looking great and strong into the World Cup
Argentina - Messi might overpower in his last World Cup
Quote: "Grinya"First match and first victory today!!!
I'm going to visit 4 matches including the Final, but unfortunately not the games of Russia. Will start tomorrow visiting Spain vs Portugal.
Also visited Euro 2012 and 2016!
Awesome, I tried to buy some tickets, but they were too expensive for me. Congratz on the 5-0 Victory, my wife was at the fan zone at the Moscow State University yesterday during the match, she said it was awesome :D
Being from Belgium, I hope the "Red Devils" will go as far as possible. They have a quite good team, despite the fact the coach (Roberto Martinez) didn't take Radja Nainggolan for "strategical purpoose" in the team, who is very appreciated in Belgium.
I think that very reason will lead a lot of people to dislike Martinez if we don't at least go to 1/2 finals because most of people have good expectations this year and were a bit disappointed by the last mundial and EURO.
The team seemed in good form in the last friendly matches. The main disadvantage is the defense which has quite suffered these last months, even if the remaining players are still good. We'll see how it's going.
Apart from the Belgian team, I like Iceland, they did great at the EURO 2016, with great supporters and a fierce envy to win. They probably won't qualify but who knows, in 2016, nobody would have predicted them in 1/4.
I quite hoped the Faroe Islands would qualify, they played unexpectedly good in the qualification phase but a bit too short.
I support England since my childhood, when I was excited by play of football masters - Gazza and Co. ..
Since that times I love English football, and Premier League.
MU is my favorite football team

I am bringing both sides' of coins to the couch to watch the match :)
Great play from Egypt with very disciplined and solid midfield in half-time and many chances created from Uruguay too. Hope this will go down to a great match, especially after our (I'm a Liverpool fan) Egyptian King Salah comes out!
Canada didn't qualify in FIFA since 1986, I still support Canada, hope it qualifies in 2022! For time being I support Argentina and Spain. Argentina for instance, is my most favorite team.

+ Bert van Marwijk, the coach of Australia
Ah he is on the side of the field Referee only one on :D
I did both jobs during last season, and enjoyed them.
Most of the season, when being a referee in local leagues, we get what is known as club assistant referees.
These are just a player or manager of that team. Usually, this is not a problem generally, but a few years ago, there were a few cheats about.
The job of referee and assistant referee is slightly different from each other, so doing both tasks throughout the season helps you learn different aspects of the game.
I still do 6-a-side, all year round, with only a few weeks off at Christmas.
Next month will see the start of pre-season friendlies, so not much rest I'm afraid, but I love it.
Unfortunately my country, Scotland, didn't make it but encouragingly gave it a go in the qualifying. I hope someone like Spain, France or Germany will win it, a mix of skill and strength. I watched the best game of the tournament tonight Spain 3 Portugal 3, nothing will compare to it.

Grinya, congrats for the 5-0 but I think that the other 2 matches will be harder for Russia.
surely.
it is a common opinion in Russia that we have the weakest team ever. And it would be very hard to play against the better teams with much less adventurous tactic.
Yesterday was a great game, happy to visit it:))

France 2-1 Australia, watching Argentina vs Iceland now :)
Supporting both! Happy game!
As my country didn't qualify I'll probably go for England.
They have a young squad and will probably have their biggest opposition in Belgium (group stage),
also good luck to Panama in their first World Cup.

With the USA, Italy and Netherlands not present, I don't have a side to root for. So I am just hoping to watch some fun and interesting soccer for the next few weeks. So far, so good.
Congratulations. Good result, but weak match...
Will support Serbia on stadium against Brazil:)
Thank you!
Next match is going to be tough and very important for us. As Switzerland and Brazil tied, they each have a point now, which means, if we loose to Switzerland, they will be first in group, and I doubt we gonna beat Brazil.
Russians playing 5-0, Argentina-Iceland ending in a draw, Spain-Portugal 3-3 great match and Iran the group leader omg, Germany losing wtf? And Brazil only ending in a draw with Switzerland.
If anyone predicted all these matches correct and bet on it they could have earned tons. Crazy!!
let’s see what tomorrow brings for England and Belgium :D

Thanks, I bet Iran 1-0 Morocco, France 2-1 Australia, Serbia 1-0 Costa Rica and Argentina 1-1 Iceland (with my friends of course). We guess each match with a score system and the highest one after all the games receive a gift.
I am looking forward to England and Belgium, hope they put up a delightful show! (Or surprise everyone by a 0-0 draw)

Quote: "Salaction"I am hoping Iran will still go through now, SRL :D
Yes, please!
Though the chances now, analytically, depend on at least one of the following:
- Morocco winning at least two goals against Portugal and Iran not losing;
- Iran winning against Spain.
Given how much I despise Sergio Ramos (2018 UCL Finals, Mo Salah ), go Iran!
SRL
As far as I guessed (predicted actually) Iran didn't win, Spain got the position! :)
Croatia-Argentina 3: 0.
Forward Croatia. Great victory

Argentina was in a win-win situation until they couldn't resist 3 goals from a new team like Croatia. Unbelievable!
It was Germany who scored at least more than 3 or 3 goals in Argentine football history. All Maradona said this time was to coach Jorge Sampaoli who was responsible for the Iceland game and the Croatia game, that the players played but his training skills were not good and that he chose Willy Caballero the goalkeeper who was responsible for not resisting the Croatian goals. Maradona's words became true. Of all, I think this year's match was not balanced. Germany lost to Mexico, Argentina's Messi and Maradona was seen the most sad and confusing as opponents took over them. Miserable lose for Argentina!

We call Russia 5-0 Saudi Arabia a surprise.
We call Germany 0-1 Iceland an upset.
We call Argentina 0-3 Croatia a humiliation.
The entire Argentine time performed as if it did not have any spirit at all, very disappointing!
However, the thing I would like to say is - rather than overestimating Argentina, we have very much underestimated Croatia. A smashing performance from the Croatians! Beautiful volley by Rebic after the miserable Caballero fail, an even more beautiful shot by Modric out of the box, and a lovely way to end the match with Rakitic's strike.

Don't you folks find it amazing how many penalties are given out? Another two today. I know there's a video referee now, but wow it's really many!!!!
And what about freaking Germany roflmao, last minute save again Like they did many times. However also this world cup many matches have been decided in last minutes :O

Go Panama!!! Own England tomorrow haha :D
Glad I watched Belgium 5-2 Tunisia yesterday, loved the last-minute goal by Tunisia so at least they could leave "satisfied"; also, an irregularly huge amount of spot kicks (and cancelled ones) this WC, really!
Well that couldn't have been decided in a more German way than yesterday. Lineker's Law (football is a game of two halves of 45 minutes and after that the Germans win) was once again in force.
A real thriller is unfolding in that group. If both Germany and Sweden win it is possible the Mexicans wake up with a hangover that dwarfs any tequila-induced one

Didn't expect the group to be that intense, really. Thought Group H would be the hardest to predict - though it was, this group came with a bunch of surprises!
Quote: "Salaction"Not a record yet, Germany was owning Brazil 5-0 in first half too once :P

For England in the recent years, really!
Oh well for England yeah xD very disappointed by 2nd half really. Why do they not go for a record? They did nothing, could say to save strength but didn’t need much strength for it. Shouldn’t have swapped Harry Kane either so he could increase his amount of goals to secure his topscorer position.

Gareth Southgate. *sigh*
I believe a reason they swapped off Harry Kane was because of how aggressively Panama was playing, constantly looking for the players to tackle and not the ball. They probably don't want Kane to get injured, though I think they really should have utilised the chance to create a reord.
Well, Russia 0-3 Uruguay and Saudi Arabia 2-1 Egypt. Everybody knew that the match vs. Uruguay was the hardest for Russia but didn't expect a 0-3.
Germany at saturday's match, what a comeback. Speechless.
Brazil at friday's match, 0-0 until the 47' of second half, wtf. And the second goal only happened because the referee waited to end the match. My feelings were from "0-0, we're screwed" to "now they score a goal??"
Uruguay played some of the spectacular matches this year with Luis Suarez almost playing as Muller or Eden. Germany and Uruguay play well and so I support them too. Uruguay is scoring goals this time at least on the 89th minute! So spectacular and interesting to see!
Didn't expect a 3-0 for Uruguay my Russian wife wasn't happy :(
Now it's Russia vs. Spain in Moscow on the 1st of July, my wives birthday, so let's win for her Russia xD
Though I doubt that'll happen. Although Spain wasn't very convincing again vs. Morocco!
But what shocked me most is Cristiano missing a penalty, dafuck? :(
Rather have him than Harry Kane being the topscorer, lol!
Russian coach decided to leave at the bench 3 important players. It showed that there is no reserve because those who substituted them played quite bad ("organized" 2 goals and the red card at the first half)...
But this game means nothing because Russia had been at playoff after the first 2 tours.
Will visit France vs Denmark today - hope it will be interesting game because both teams don't need to park the bus.
Salah said that he hope to play at WC2022!

Yay! Argentina progressed to the round of 16! What a outstanding performance by Messi and Rojo! Feeling glad that Argentina at last won their difficult and a steeper path to the 16s. Not only that, Argentina could not have won unless Croatia won their match against Iceland. Happy to see Argentina emerging to round of 16!

I wouldn't have expected a Rojo volley with his weaker foot to be the decider if someone told me before the match!

True! But damn it! Unexpectedly Germany had an error 404 today! Didn't expected a losing game for Germany from Muller or Neuer. The game was on at its level at the last moment the Koreans scored 2 goals. Was not happy to see Germany leave the WC 2018. Sweden scored 3 today, Belgium scored 5 and England did 6 and Germany couldn't do 10! Another 1 minute silence please for Germany this time (for losing and leaving FIFA '18) !

We had a good qualifying campaign but not a single good game since Summer 2017.
Hope this lesson will bring in someone new, who can bing back spirit, morale and young new players.
Congratulations to Sweden and Mexico for going into the last 16 it was truly deserved.
I think tomorrow we might see a game that could be important in giving clues of who might win this tournament.

Well, one way I am very glad for Sweden, Mexico and South Korea - they deserve the joy they got from advancing/beating the former world champions! The other way, I believe that it is a very good opportunity for Joachim Low to, well, realise that his team is not invincible - and that his success in 2014 was solely due to the golden generation of footballers in Germany supporting the game. Without the perfect team like 2014, Germany cannot win unless they have a positive tactical approach - they have to actually play well and not advance because they are meant to.
I am looking very forward to the football matches between Group H and Group G tonight, especially England and Belgium! Go, Samurais! (though I have this suspense feeling that the England vs Belgium match will end as a boring match as both teams will not want to risk it)
A hilariously ironic phrase to say Japan goes through over Senegal based on "fair play" if you watched what Japan did the last half hour of the game just passing it around.
Dumb by Belgium to score on England, they put themselves into the absurdly difficult side of the bracket. Martinez did not look amused about the goal by Januzaj. Belgium are just as capable of any of the powers on that side of advancing but whoever survives that side may be spent for the final. I look for the semifinalists to be France, Belgium, Croatia and Colombia but that is just a guess. Almost no result would surprise me.

I very much agree with what you said, Belgium created a problem for it to solve! However, do not underestimate Colombia to England, they can be strong at times!
No results would surprise me too.

Edit: Portugal out! Wow.
It was worth staying up late to watch the France vs Argentina match as it was very thrilling. Argentina lost its mind and had no tactical approach, with France on a very good breakthrough, exposing the speed of the Argentinian defence and using direct passes to outspeed them and score. What a game!

Well, one way I am very glad for Sweden, Mexico and South Korea - they deserve the joy they got from advancing/beating the former world champions!

As I said in my only other post here, I'm not much for football myself but even I heard about that on the Daily Show with Trevor Noah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_-gHCWxuZ0
Awesome host, by the way; his presentation makes me interested in the last things I thought I could ever be interested in hearing about.
This year's match was really unbalanced. Germany, Argentina and Spain lost and went out of WC 2018. Unexpected lose from all these teams. Spain could have won today but it was only tie-breaker that they made sure they lost to Russia. Argentina, Germany, Spain and Uruguay were my favorite teams and Uruguay now have to make this long run to the finals, hope Suarez will make it and Messi must try again for 2022! Uruguay and Portugal played so well all because they had good defence and Argentina did not have one. This time also, Dybala from Argentina was not there, if he was, Argentina could still progress to the finals. Higuain was not there in the last match. Argentina lost much likely because there was a disunity between the players and more likely because of Argentina boss Jorge Sampaoli. Supporting for Uruguay now!

have fun at the match :D
we got in and it was awesome ^^
To be fair, when it entered penalty shootout, I was already celebrating for Russia - David De Gea is an absolute garbage in saving things!
What a match last night!
I'm very pleased with Eric Dier's penalty, also well done Colombia for scoring in the 93rd minute.
Very entertaining however there were a good few yellow cards handed out.
I hope England and Sweden is as exciting!

IT'S A MIRACLE! ENGLAND HAVE WON A PENALTY SHOOTOUT!
In all seriousness though, great performance by both sides during the match. It was much more entertaining than SUI vs SWE.
Didn't like the match at all, the Colombians weren't playing any football at all for the majority of the match, playing very dirty! I am glad England won, I was for the Colombian beforehand, but after what I saw I changed my mind! Gz England!
Salaction, I'm not fully agree with you. Both teams played dirty. English players also behaved Neymar-style with a lot of simulations and divings. As well as Colombians, yes, but I didn't expect it from the England team.
The reason is referee, I think, who lost control on the game and took a lot of strange and inconsistent decisions, mostly for the benefit of England.
But I like such games. Very emotional.
