Shells / coins / cards / micro devices / black hole?

- Shells, year 5000 B.C. (nobody had an interest in collecting)
- Coins, year 500 BC (real numismatic collections have been created just in the last few centuries)
- Magnetic cards, 1950 (someone already collect them, hoping they are equivalent to coins)
- Remote micro devices, 'could be' in 2040 AD circa: (no coins or cards, for all transactions)
- Black hole... the end of collecting?
1 Credit cards are not issued by public authorities and do not use noble metal with commemorative high reliefs. Thus, the value (non-monetary, but 'collectible') of them should be much lower than that of coins.
2 Tokens or other no-contact devices: studying or collecting them would be as poor as the cards, almost the same: few differences among them, no historical or cultural elements (they are not money, they are means), no statal authority, scarce artistic beauty (and, art is the maximum return of the intellect).
Nothingness? Furthermore, the consequences could be:
- human beings, without the habit of using coins in their hands, lose interest in studying or collecting objects of the past that they do not directly know (currently, we study commercial shells on books, we have no real interest in a collection).
- The devices of the future are rich in technology, very poor in artistic or descriptive material.
Will the future be without active collectors (consequently our collections depreciate) ? Will there be collections of electronic devices, or nothing, a black hole?
What do you think? (I am always pessimistic, because I know well the richest cultural variety of the past)...
There will always be coin collectors
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

Coin collecting, banknote collecting and maybe...Credit card collecting!

I think it will be much like what has happened with stamps. You'll get much fewer collectors so the price of lower and middle value coins will tank (more coins on the market, not as many people buying them), the higher value coins will keep their value as people collect them as an investment, and then there will always be people that collect the gold and silver coins for their bullion.
What? Me Worry

I totally agree.
Coins will go the way of stamps. Next will be collectors of credit cards. Then we all get a microchip.

Credit card collectors? I think the gundam credit cards in Japan is a must to collect but dam expensive.
Be kind to people. Sharing is Caring. Collect what you like and not by the Crowd.
To seek for perfection, it is too painful and there is a very high price to pay. To seek for something comfortable is more easy. To seek for nothing is even more easy.

I agree with this position. You don't have to look far to see excavations of sites in the UK that go back 11-15,000 years & what do they find (besides bones & pottery?) Usually coins of some sort. Stamps have no relevance whatsoever to be compared to coins, gold nor paper MONEY! They started off as a tax to post items & remain fringe collector items like beer coasters & cigar boxes. Every culture has valued gold but only a few cultures valued shells (ivory, furs & other resources). History teaches us valuable lessons but we cannot extrapolate in a linear fashion to predict our future.

It's very easy to be a nihilist or adopt antiquated philosophical positions on technological mediated commerce but its quite another to claim that human nature will alter so drastically that society will be like some sci-fi script from Oz (I'm thinking Mad Max: Fury Road).

Why all the negativity? Is it this pandemic?

"Is it this pandemic?"
No, plandemic.
Just like all other major financial disasters to include the US Great Depression and the inflation of the Weimar Republic.
You are entitled to disagree with my views, but I withdrew my life savings from the bank and bought physical silver when I saw this coming. In little over 4 months it has doubled.

Considering the current social, cultural, economic and demographic statistics, being very positive could also show 'little analytical ability' ...
For example, your population could be disintegrated by Chinese weapons ... there could also be racism against whites soon ...
I also hope that my material goods (coins) will be always full of ''blinding light'', but the problem lies in the educational quality of the new world popular mass ...

I have never heard of "plandemic" nor did I explicitly oppose your views. What you mean by that- you should at least try to explain. Each one of us will have their own philosophical outlook on life (to be sure) & you are entitled to distrust the banks & invest in bullion. This is not unusual. You are like millions of people all over the world who have redistributed their savings during turbulent times. Now that tech/social media is part of our lives, many Youtubers continue to bash big government, banks, currency & forecasted all sorts of catchy apocalyptic scenarios via conspiracy theories to wrack up hits in the hopes they maintain/build audiences. Nothing new there, but this is way off topic.

You have not provided any concrete statistics thus far. There have been doomsday prophets since historians began recording social events. Your OP was about hobbies (as I recall) and you were asking what Numista members thought about the future of it.

A plandemic is an epidemic that has been planned.

Probably a very brave decision.
Would you consider cashing in now or wait a bit longer.

I'm expecting things to get a lot worse before they get better.
And when they do, the price of precious metals will only go up.

Until then I'm selling off non-numismatic collections to buy more.

Did you take advantage of the share market crash in March 2020. A lot of my friends doubled their investment. I missed the boat.
I was buying from the local coin shop up until March 25, when it was ordered closed by the governor.

Has the coin shop not reopened? They only closed stuff at the beginning.
Why would someone creat a plandemic?
I have been wondering what the truth is, but you can’t believe anything that you see on a screen...

The coin shop re-opened a few weeks ago.

As for why I consider this COVID exercise a plandemic, or why anyone would do such a thing is outside the scope of the original question.
It would certainly cause a heated discussion, and the thread would likely be shut down.
