I think just about any small enough item that can fit in the grooves of the vinyl record can play them, n'est ce pas?

technically yes ... practically no you also need a resonance body which vibrates at a frequency fit for the human ear

I was interested so I pulled out a polymer bill from Guatemala and wound up my Victrola. it will play as well :) Obviously nowhere near as loud or clear as the needle, but it definitely works
