Mexico 1 Peso 1898 Originals and Restrikes

2 posts
In the Krause catalog, it identifies two varieties of the 1898 MoAM peso: an original with 139 beads, and a restrike (1949) with 134 beads on the reverse. The restrike mintage is listed as 10.25 million pieces.

In "Foreign Coins Struck at United States Mints" (1965) by Altz and Barton, it states that the 1949 restrikes have only 131 denticles on the reverse, the mintage is only 2 million pieces, and that they were minted in the San Francisco Mint. This book was written from U. S. Mint reports.

Which is correct??

Howdy, I have this very coin and have counted the denticles 3 times…131.  Can't say about the 2 million struck, but since they have the number of denticles correct,  I would guess the mintage at 2,000,000 is also correct.  Further, if one searches availability for this piece, it is no problem seeing that the restrike is not nearly as available as the original at 10,000,000. Thx…Joseph
