2 Reales Coin - Is this one real?

7 posts
Hey Numista, new collector here. I been looking into coins and with older coins I always hear you have to be careful with fakes. I was wondering if anybody would happen to know if this one on eBay is real or not? I am considering it since I think older coins are cool. Thanks friends.

Coin in question:

What I collect: US, 3rd Reich Germany, Philippines, Ancients, Vatican City, North Korea.
It looks fine to me. the seller seems to have good feedback from ebay. The coin is in bad condition, so that reduces the chance of it being a fake.

It looks like it is ok, but be wary of Ebay. Many times coins are fake.

Hope this Helps:)

Thanks! What are general tips to look for fakes with older coins and ancients?

After looking at the coin a little longer it seems that it is not from Mexico but from Guatemala (still part of the Spanish Empire). The mint mark is shown "NG" the mint mark for Mexico is "Mo."

I still think that the coin is real.
My suggestion when buying old coins is to first, identify them, then check for errors in design. If nothing stands out I would suggest, that you look at the seller, and see their feed back. If you are really not sure, I would either look for the coin online or ask the Numista community for help.

Here is the link to your coin on Numista, but it is too worn down to enter on the website:

Thanks for the advice! So if a corn is worn down it's not allowed to be listed on my profile or is it courtesy just to not list one that worn down?

I think what he meant was that the grades on Numista only go down to VG, so yours doesn't meet the criteria. However, I've got plenty of low grade coins, and I just input them all as VG even though I know they are lower than that.

Ah I see! Thanks. This was a coin I found on eBay I was just thinking about grabbing.
