Mexican 50 Centavos

7 posts
I recently obtained a 50 Centavos from Mexico which has an 1898 date on it in the mint date location; yet the design is a modern design used between 1992 and 2002, I believe.

Why would a new coin design carry an old mint date?
Maybe it was blurred to read 1898 instead of 1998.

Upload a photo, and we'll see.

Thanks!

I have looked at it under magnification and both 8's in 1898  look similar to me.  I will see if I can provide you with a good picture for your review.
See what you think.

Has the date been altered?

It's 1998.

It could also be 1999. It's a Nuevo peso so it couldn't be 1898.

I was hoping I had found a minting error!
