Coinage of Georgia

Hello, dear friends.
As I'm an admin of Georgia section, I'd like to put your attention on country "Georgia" . This small country, located between Turkey, Russian Federation, Azerbaijan and Armenia, has a great history of same people on the same land for more than 3000 years.

Many of You guess that coinage of Georgia is just a few coins of 1993 and several commemorative ones. But Georgian numismatics goes almost to ancient times. Georgia has a very hard and bloody history, as well, as a lot of countries, and each step of its history was mirrored on its coinage. Finally we have a very colorful and versatile row of coins, struck in Georgia, as free country, as vassal of other country, or as occupied territory.

Georgian coinage is very interesting and not completely studied part of Caucasian numismatics.
I will try to increase step by step Georgian part of Numista, and You will be pleasantly surprised how interesting is it.
I wrote this topic because my country is too small and numismatic interest of this region also too poor. But to say the true, Georgian coinage t does not deserve such an attitude.
And You will see why.
Have a good time with Georgian coins! I will write here sometimes updates of my section, if you agree, my friends.
Sincerely yours,
David

I visited Georgia last year and I just want to add that it is a beautiful country with very friendly people and interesting cuisine. The country deserves the attention not only because of numismatic, I highly recommend everybody to visit it.

I am very curious about all the odd shapes. How and why did they come to be?
because of so-called " silver famine" in the region in 11-12th century. They were struck dies on the randomly hammered pieces of copper. and there was no denomination, only weight of copper was counted as "value" . Valid was a piece of copper , marked by state stamp/dies. that why so odd shaped coins were in those times.

I wonder if Georgia was a free state in the 19th century because their coins have marked no reign/rule.
Georgia should/would follow rest of catalog and be divided into several countries by the way.

No, it was occupied by Russian Empire, and divided to 2 governorates ( Guberniya) , and became a part of Russian Empire untill 1918.
Georgian coinage 1806 to 1833 is like colonial coinage of any empire for quite far territory. Georgia was most far southern territory from Petersburg.

This is sums up what's happened. This is what's happening now in post Soviet Union territory. I feel your pain David. I know our small countries will win. Now we are all united! Look at us in Canada! We can't lose.

Thank You, my friend. :) History is quite exact science, if it is in correct hands. The fact that Georgian ( Kartli-Kakheti) Kingdom asked Russian Empire for military support , and then it was cancelled , and erased as nobody from its 2000 history never did with it, - is true. Even Ottomans, Persians, Arabs and Ilkhans never touched Political structure inside Georgia, because they knew that better to keep it and just grow money and soldiers.
But the aim of Russian Empire was to erase a country from map, and from peoples mind.
Yes, i agree, - there are always empires, and small countries. - and this problem is so old as mankind :)
I keep a Hope that all people will live in peace and harmony someday. who knows :) At least Numista is a place were we live without ethnical, political , color, sexual and other fights. thanks to all :)

David, then when Tbilisi was annexed by Russian Empire, I think it was like a feudatory state which had it's coinage under the Tbilisi administration of Russian Empire?

:The history of Georgia during Ottoman and Russian times motivated me to collect them too! :D

There was no " Tbilisi Administration" . Russian Governor was sitting in Tbilisi and ruled by whole Georgia. But coinage was only for Georgia, not for near regions. Something like as British coinage in India.
Chalkos of Dioskuria added to the ancient Georgia section, enjoy it  :)

Kudos to you and keep them coming! :wiz:

No old Georgian coins have ever crossed my path, but if they ever do, at least now I'll know what to keep an eye out for.

Wiki :
A son of Queen Tamar and her consort David Soslan, George was declared as a coregent by his mother in 1207. He had princely domain in Javakheti, centered at Alastani, for which he was known by the title of javakht' up'ali, i.e., "the Lord of the Javakhians" as suggested by a type of silver coins struck in his name.[1]

George IV continued Tamar's policy of strengthening of the Georgia feudal state. He put down the revolts in neighbouring Muslim vassal states in the 1210s and began preparations for a large-scale campaign against Jerusalem to support the Crusaders in 1220. However, the Mongol approach to the Georgian borders made the Crusade plan unrealistic. The first Mongol expedition defeated two Georgian armies in 1221–1222 and left through Inner Caucasus. Georgians suffered heavy losses in this war and the King himself was severely wounded. King Georgi IV went to Bagavan, Armenia, to secure his sister's marriage to the Shah of Shirvan and ensure her succession.[2] Lasha George became an invalid and died prematurely in Bagavan at the age of 31. He was succeeded by his sister Rusudan.

George Lasha was known as an open minded person and met much criticism from a conservative feudal society. The nobles and Christian clergymen rejected his wife and failed to recognize her as queen. She was a girl from a family of commoners. Ultimately, the King had to compromise and divorced her formally, refusing, however, to marry anyone else.

Some medieval sources characterize George IV as a wise ruler and brave warrior, while others point to his immoral life style and addiction to mysticism and even Sufism.

He was survived by a son David (the future King David VII Ulu). George was buried at Gelati monastery.

Enjoy !

Meantime , I added new coin to the Georgian Kingdom - Regula AE of Girogi IV lasha, very rare and awesome coin,
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces144607.html

Hello,

Thank you Dato Mikeladze for the great work!

I was trying recently to add some coins and realised that this section could benefit from a bit more structure.

Firstly, there are some issuers that should be added:

Georgia, Kingdom of
---- Georgia, Kingdom of
---- Iberians, Kingdom of the (one copper type I can find issued by David III)
---- Kartli, Kingdom of (one billon type I can find issued by David X)
---- Kartli-Kakheti, Kingdom of (example)
---- Khakheti, Kingdom of (example)

Any thoughts on this?

Another thing we can do is to add ruling authorities, I made a list already, and once we split the issuers I can also add the rulers.

Best
:wiz:
Hello,
yes, It would be nice. But I guess there will be some problems to definite rulers and kingdoms.
I'm not very good at history, and even modern historians disagree about certain rulers, kingdoms, and time boundaries. Some kings were just formally kings of united Georgia, while other rulers were ruled in some other parts of his kingdom, and they called themelves as seprarate kingdoms and kings.

we can try, and time will show what should be correct or change.
Kingdoms of Iberia, Tao-Klarjerti are too uninvestigated structures. even in Georgian numismatic literature there are no these kingdoms as coin issuers.

Most authors, to avoid such problems, just use modern territory of Georgia, and also territorie which ever issued coins with Georgian language and signs.
even on Zeno, there is too strange name " Struggle for unification" , and this sector includes all coinage before David the Builder.
Also, YOu can find a sector " Georgia under Mongols" . it means, that for Mongols it was Mongolian territory, but Georgian kingdom was still functioning, and coins were issued with Georgian rulers. Formally, most of those kings were still kings of United Georgian Kingdom, but in fact t was just geographical Kartli-Kakheti, with center in Tbilisi, and there were vassals of Ilkhan,.
same with 16-18 centuries,. when Georgia was under Persia, but still had its coins.
so.. it is too difficult, as well as everything in our region ))))
I will help what i can. Again, Im far from professional historian  :)
Yours,
david
