Banknote forum

May we please have a banknote forum? There has been agitation for a banknote forum forever. I suspect it would be more busy then some of the forums have been for awhile. It would keep the coin side of numismatics and numista free of the banknote side of numismatics. It would be great for those of us who also collect banknotes. And it would be a start for those around the world who visit the numista website and are surprised that some aspects of numismatics are presently ignored.
I am hopeful that at a certain point paper money will be a part of this site. It is as simple as creating a template and then adding a currency for each country called "paper" or "banknotes" and orienting it in such away that all notes appear after coins in the country listings, and are able to be removed from lists or searches if a collector wants it removed...

That must be great for banknote -collectors. I have none of my banknote collection. Still, some enthusiastic collectors might be able to swap or trade banknotes in the Banknote Forum. And some Banknote trade or swap in the current "Swaps and Trades" are not looking great in that form.
Please, post this message as "Suggestion for Numista" here on the "Site forum" to keep track of your idea.

Amen!

I'd love to see it implemented but Dear Leader has indicated that he doesn't wish the site to evolve in that particular direction. His house, his rules, I reckon. As he's the one to be doing the heavy lifting I can live with his decision.

You could make an equally strong case for including postage stamps, although I think the over abundance of commemorative junk would be a headache. (Has anyone else ever wondered why we don't get plagued by commemorative banknotes???) Not just from a cataloging perspective although I would love to be able to use Numista to keep track of my modest banknote and stamp collection in a one stop shop. Can you imagine how great it would be to see the long awaited values field along with an integrated swap engine which would allow users to swap a wildly delicious mix of coins, notes and stamps? That would be really something eh? I don't think there's a website that offers anything close, well maybe Colnect but it's a bit crude for my tastes. I don't think it's going to happen in the short term but maybe one day....
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

The reason I was never really interested in stamps is because I very quickly found out just how many there are (even discounting the obvious junk, something like two dozen per country per year), and short of focusing on a narrow theme (which I doubted I would be able to) I would never be able to be in any way close to any kind of completion.
(Now if only I was able to guess the same thing for ancient coins...)

As for commemorative banknotes - pretty sure the Canadians do that already, and Russia is also starting on that game lately.
I guess the other countries mostly don't because they don't want the locals so confused as to which banknotes exist that said locals would easily accept fake (and/or foreign) money. Already the case with coins, you know (Australian 10 cent coins are known to have passed as quarters, even though they're completely different in anything except size and color).
Good points. But stamps represent currency. Banknotes and coins are both numismatic and are used to buy philately items. It would be extremely easy to limit this website to numismatic items. Banknotes are at least as numismatic as the tokens on this site. But all I'm asking for is a forum. Some forum use is so sporadic in some categories that I wish we just had a chance...

In before someone else points out that stamps have been used as currency in many parts of the world!

I've always presumed that the majority of coin collectors have, like me, at the very least a passing interest in both banknotes and stamps. If I'm asked what is your hobby I would reply "I collect coins". So while I don't specifically identify as a collector of stamps and banknotes I just reckon that most folks would understand this.

Perhaps it's something which should be put to the test? A poll of the membership indicating if they collect A, B, C and in which order would (I think) make a good case for being more inclusive. It would help make the case for a banknote forum.

It has started x. I guess it was only a matter of time before someone saw they could make money with touristic banknotes.

It seems only France is affected now, but it could spread...
