Questions about Canadian coins from 50's, education needed, weird Canadian coins and trade requests

4 posts
Hi everyone :8D

I've been working very hard trying to find as many Canadian coins as I can for my collection!
I have recently updated my coin books and I am looking for some help trying to track down some more to fill the holes up in my books!!! :wiz:

Can anyone help me with any of these coins?!?!

I am open for trades from mainly the U.S.A. right now.
But if you are from Canada and you happen to have a lot of the coins that I am looking for,
then I might be interested in a trade with you also!

I was also hoping that someone could please show me the differences between certain coins.
Perhaps post some examples in the form of side by side pictures for me please?
I am looking for some education on this in the form of visual examples please.

Here are some examples of what I am talking about:

The difference between the 1951 high and low relief nickels:

Only applies to the regular issue with the beaver on the reverse. On the obverse you have to look at the tip of the "A" in "GRATIA". If it points between two denticles then it is a low relief (the more common one) and if it points directly to a denticle then it is the far more valuable high relief variety. This is a good reference for pictures:

The 1953 nickels:

To tell the difference between a Shoulder Fold (SF) and No Shoulder Fold (NSF) nickel look at the "I" in "DEI" of the obverse. If the "I" looks similar to the to the capital I used in this font then it is a SF variety. Otherwise if the top and bottom of the I is flared outwards then it is the NSF variety.

For the Near Leaf (NL) and Far Leaf (FL) varieties check the leaf on the left side of the reverse. If the upper tip of the leaf is almost touching a denticle then it is a NL, otherwise if there is a bit of a gap then it is a FL. The two more valuable nickels here are the SF FL and NSF NL varieties.
Again this site is good for reference:

1996 nickel:

Look at the space between the top of the 6 and the D in Canada. If there is a larger gap then it is a far 6 and if there is not much of a gap it will be a near 6. It looks like the Far 6 is more valuable but not nearly as much as the other nickels mentioned above.

1951 Double Die Reverse Dime:

I am assuming you are asking about this one because of the spot in the Whitman folder for this variety (I have the same folder), I managed to get one on eBay a few years ago but can't seem to get a very good picture of it with the camera I have. If you look very very closely at the "10 Cents" at the bottom you can see that it is double. May need a magnifying glass or loupe to see it though, I can barely make it out without the aid of one. There is a close up picture of one on this site (under more errors and varieties click on "Double 10 Cents"):

http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-prices.php?coin=10-cents-1951&years=10-cents-1937-1952

1953 SF and NSF dimes and quarters:

Same way as the nickels, check the "I" in "DEI" is a fairly easy way to tell the difference.

1978 Square/Round Jewel:

Check the crown in between the 19 and 78. Near the bottom band of the crown there will be three jewels (one in the middle and one on either side of that one). The one in the middle is a square jewel. If the ones on either side looks the same as the middle one then it is a square jewel variety. If the ones on either side of the middle square one look like dots then it is the round jewel variety.

1982 Large and Small beads:

I have a hard time with this one especially when the coins are more worn. The easy identifier for this one is to look at the amount of detail in the queens hair on the very left just below the crown. If there is a lot of detail (very defined lines) then it is most likely a Small Beads variety and if there is not much detail (looks worn almost) then it is probably a Large Beads variety. The Small Beads one is the more valuable one here.

By the way I still have quite a few coins on your list if you ever want to go through with that swap we started about a year ago. Just send me a message if you are interested.
WOW! :wiz:

That is a lot of awesome information!

I remember we were going to trade a long time ago. But I was pretty new then and was not too sure about what I was doing...But now I've got the hang of this it seems.

I will look back at that list you sent to me way back when. Are you still looking for a bunch of American coins?

I will put a list together of coins and string some years together for you also and send you a few pictures.
If you want them, I can send them to you and you can just tell me what you'd like to give me from my list of Canadian Coins that I am looking for...

Mostly I am trying to get the more modern years out of the way (60's 70's 80's 90's and up)
Especially the extremely common coins that I just have not managed to get yet.

I've been lucky enough to find some really cool large cents and some 50 cent pieces over the past year or so.
I've actually gotten more than I thought I would ever find to be honest! So that is pretty exciting to me!

I'd love to find a few more of the large size dollar coins too, those are awesome!

Most of all I really want to complete the small cents books! That's what started it all!!!

I got really lucky and met this awesome person who calls himself a beekeeper. I've been trying to get a hold of him for a long time. He helped me tremendously with my Canadian Coin collection, I mean he sent me ridiculous amounts of coins, I almost destroyed my wheelchair and died. /!\ (8 /!\ He hooked me up twice actually and I have to hit'em back with some coins. A lot of people have sent cool coins actually and I am so grateful for this cool website with so many cool people on it.

Today, I just got a new 1923 nickle from some dude in Ohio. We just traded like a 2 for 1 sorta deal...I was thrilled because I have not gotten a new Canadian Coin in a looooooooong time!!!

SO CHUFFED!!! :8D

I normally just do really small trades with people, but sometime I will do bigger ones.
I really want to get as many of the Canadian Coins as I can!!! :wiz:

The info you sent rules! I am really going to take the time to read about this...
Thanks for that!

If you want I will set aside a bunch of American coins for you.
I have some brand new uncirculated 2017 quarters and other coins.
I will just take a bunch of pictures for ya and then you can pick all that you like.

Thanks for the response!!!!
I am starting to trade again please
