US Currency Question - 1864 City of St. Paul $2

6 posts
Now I know this is a coin site, but I'm sure a lot of us collect currency too. I inherited this from my late grandparents. They had a decent amount of silver dollars and dimes and the like, but they also had this gem. I didn't know they had it until they were gone so I have no clue where they got it.
Now here's the sticky wicket: I can't find any information on this note. Everything I find online is either about Confederate currency or notes drawn on National Banks. This appears to be drawn on a city bank.

March 5, 1864
City of St. Paul
$2
Number 851
*the only thing on the reverse is the bleed-through of the red ink used for the spelled out "TWO".

Any ideas?

Do not argue with ignorant people .. !! They will drag you down to their level, then pulverize you with experience ...
You might really have something there. The example below sold for $258.50 in a Heritage auction in 2015:

I like yours a lot better! I'm not an expert in obsolete currency but I've owned several pieces through the years and I see nothing at first glance to suggest your note is anything but genuine.

Pieces like this fall under the collector rubric of "obsolete currency" or "broken bank notes". Yours seems to be issued by the city itself rather than a bank.
Hello glorkar nice to see you are back. hope all is well with you.
It is, what it is, or is it.
Thanks guys, that was quick!

@derf - Thanks for that bit of history. It's always neat learning tidbits like this. And oddly enough, one of the guys that started a bank shares my last name (no relation though, lol).

@dltcoins - That one is definitely much rougher than mine. And it was a higher number as well. It's nice to have some sort of price reference though.

@allred1950 - It's sure been a while. Other hobbies took me in other directions for quite some time. Looks like it's coins and currency for a bit again :)
