I've been browsing over at The FORVM ANCIENT COINS website trying yet again to get a grip on ancients and well, you know how it is on the internetz... you start off looking for one thing and after several hours of browsing down dozens of rabbit holes you wonder where your evening went!
I got really stuck one one particular collection, just couldn't stop looking at it. I've been doing this for longer than many of you have been alive so I don't often get excited. Maybe it's the exotic and unfamiliar subject matter but I'm thinking this has to be one of the absolute finest collections in private hands. Go look for yourself - am I wrong?
It's not just the size of the collection, every single coin in it is like a collector's dream come true. Apart from coins there's some banknotes and a variety of antiquities which could grace any museum. You can't build a collection like that just by throwing money at it - there's a whole lot of care and knowledge in that recipe fellers.
You might recognise the name. I take my hat off to you Quaint Geek, that's just an awe inspiring collection. Congratulations.
Non illegitimis carborundum est. Excellent advice for all coins.

I am always in awe of his contributions to various threads and games here on the forum. What I wouldn't give to stand in that room for a week and just look around.
This really is a fantastic collection!! I thought the history imbued in coins was cool, but a genuine Roman wax tablet stylus? Come on, are you kidding me? Amazing! And I'm not sure I could have an authentic Eye of Horus amulet in my house... way too much "old time religion" there for me to not feel haunted by the centuries.

Well... it helps, though, doesn't it? Maybe that's where the "Quant" part comes in. (No, I'm not envious... OK, maybe a little. )
I always appreciate QuantGeek's contributions here - a font of knowledge in areas of numismatics I know very little about!
Wow! I am flattered by all the complements about my collection. Thank you so much. The funny thing here is that, with respect to coins, this is only about 50% of my collection. The coins I have pre-internet has never been photographed and that includes my childhood collection.
There is still A LOT of manuscripts that needs to be documented as well as some of my recent coin purchases. My collection is based on the fact that I love history, epigraphy, and world cultures and religions. So, it spans several centuries across a vast region of Europe and Asia.
As for the Quant in Quant.Geek, it stands for "Quantitative Finance" which is what I do for a living. Love Math, Finance, and Computers, so I made a career out of it...
The funny thing about the MPCC entries is that I thought I would add some historically and culturally relevant items for South America, but boy did it bomb. Not the prettiest, but significant nonetheless. Didn't even get one vote on that category! Lets see what comes up next year

Not only does he have a marvelous collection, but he is also constantly posting stuff I have to look up and read about to understand. Like I didn't even know about wax and clay tablets (those stylus's are awesome). However I don't understand this one.....

Gordon Gekko: Now you're not naive enough to think we're living in a democracy, are you buddy? It's the free market.
An awesome collection indeed. The ancients are not my cup of tea, however I really appreciate the aesthetic values of the coins from that period, considering the substantial fall in quality in the earlier medieval times. Having said that, as a metal detecting enthusiast, I can say that finding some Roman denarii in a field that's 15 min away on foot from your very home is a real thrill.
Bartweegie, you find Roman coins with your metal detector? That would be so fun! Here in North America I find stone arrow heads. What's the best coin you have dug up?
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

I'd say my best piece so far (and the favourite one) is a Scottish Quarter Merk from 1602. I found a full Merk of exactly the same design as well, but very worn.
