A new law was passed today, totally untrue, but if it was, and you could only collect coins from 1 country, which would it be? Your own country, or somewhere else?
The country you choose, must have the designated country name on it, so if a country has changed its name, you can only collect from the named coin country. Obviously, the UK does not designate the country of origin.
Mine would be Poland as I have many more interesting ones to get, but if I chose Katanga, my collection would be complete
That's a little tricky. So Burmese could either collect coins of Burma or coins of Myanmar? Or similarly Ceylon vs Sri Lanka?
How about "India" ...whether pre/post 1947, the coins only say "India". However technically there are three entities - under British Empire, under Dominion and the Republic. Or can we include the East "India" company.
OK, I'm just being needlessly complicated about this. If I had to collect coins, it would probably be from India (assuming I can collect both British and Rep India).
So how far back are you allowed to go with "Poland"; I imagine you have barred yourself from the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth.
At the moment, I try and collect coins from 1900 and after, so, in the case of Poland, it is generally modern coinage, especially the commemoratives. Have the odd one or two previous to WWII, but not many. Do not really see many of them for sell, here in the UK.
I suppose I would go back further in date if I could only collect the one country
It would most likely be the US as there is a good amount of variety with all of the different numismatic material available, but Germany would be a close second as they also have a tremendous amount of variety to collect.
I guess at this point in my collecting, I'd have to go with the US because I'm so far along but it would be boring indeed because purchases would be just a handful a year due to the cost of most of what I need.
I will be at the forefront of the protest against this law!
A difficult question, there are so many countries from where I love the coins. But since my youth I have a special predilection for Australia, so my final choice would be Australia. I also spent there my 6 weeks pre-honeymoon.
I already focus on one country only, Canada, especially pre-Confederation, though I include foreign coins that circulated here (mostly France till 1750s, Spanish colonial, Great Britain, USA). I also collect Roman coins, though less systematically. Almost everything else will be "swappable" once I get organized.
If I had to choose some other country, it would probably be either India or Egypt.
If I had to chose one theme rather than one country, it would probably be women's portraits on coins, from Hellenistic times (e.g. Egyptian queens) till now.
In answer to a couple of questions posed.
If the coin has the country on it, such as France or India, then that counts, in my mind, as one country.
So, India, Portuguese India ect is one country. Same with France and its colonies.
I am very pleased to see the diversity of countries chosen.
For many years, I collected only US coins. I did have a few Canadian coins that strayed across the border when the US and Canadian dollars were close to parity. Only in the past five years or so, have I branched out to foreign coins.
MonaSeaclaid,
Just looked at the Newfoundland section and I have 14 of the coins listed.
Hope you have the gold 2 dollar coin. It looks beautiful.
I am assuming you do not own the pattern coin

I wish.
As of now my overall goal is to have one of every Newfoundland coin, except for the 2 dollar coins. I hope to see one in person one day. Maybe someday I'll include them. I'm also not including the 1946 five cent piece. I've only ever even seen two for sale and they're certainly pricey, if you can authenticate them. Even the known fakes can go for a fair bit if they're good enough.
They are indeed beautiful though. In fact all the designs from that era have really beautiful borders, and then they moved to a more basic design with the name of the country featured a bit more prominently. Still elegant if you ask me. But I might be biased.
Oklahoman,
Great choice with the Isle of Man.
I think that will keep you busy for a few years. I really love their coins, especially the commemorative crowns.
The coins with a Polish association. That alone could give you several lifetimes of coin collecting. The next choice would be Germany (there's plethora of states to collect).
I am still blown away by the diversity of countries that you people out there would collect.
From the very old to more modern and from countries around the globe.
What a great world it is to have such choices and long may it continue
Boi, that's really a difficult question! There are so many cool countries to collect coins from, I really like coins from Yugoslavia, Croatia, Hungary, Peru, etc. etc. etc. But when it really comes to that point I'd probably go for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Those coins have so much sentimental value for me, I couldn't think of living without them!

That's what I love about this hobby, there is literally something for everyone out there. (Especially with the Canadian Mint on the case. Zing!) The variety of collections is equal to the number of collectors.
I am starting to trade again please
Open to trades with members in the United States and Canada at this time
Please help me find Canadian Coins for my collection!!!
